Chapter One: The Trembling Clerk

Boston, April 21, 1855. A nervous Sunday school teacher named Edward Kimball walks past a Court Street shoe store three times before he works up the courage to step inside. In the back room, a teenage clerk is stocking shelves. Kimball stammers out a single sentence about the love of Christ, walks out thinking he has failed — and has just led Dwight L.
