Mercy Brown: Reburied Without Her Heart, New England’s Last Vampire
In 1892, a grieving father in Exeter, Rhode Island watched his neighbors dig up his family members, burn his daughter’s organs, and feed the ashes to his dying son. This is that story. George Brown had already lost his wife and daughter to tuberculosis when the community turned its desperation into something darker. Mercy Brown, just 19 years old, had been stored in an above-ground crypt through winter. When her body showed minimal decomposition, her neighbors saw vampirism. They removed her heart and liver, burned them, and gave the remains to her brother Edwin as medicine. He died weeks later. What does it say about us that even a scientific voice like Dr. Metcalf could not stop what fear had already set in motion? Incredibly, the incident reportedly inspired Bram Stoker’s famous vampire novel and represented the final case in a two-hundred-year phenomenon that produced nearly eighty exhumations (a staggering number most people never know about). The story ended a long chapter in American folklore. Today, Mercy’s grave still receives flowers, gifts, and symbolic vampire teeth from visitors. Celestine's Forbidden Apprenticeship with the Soucouyant of Trinidad
Rarely does a childhood memory carry the weight of the supernatural quite like this one. In a hair salon in early 2000s Massachusetts, a psychic reader named Celestine shared a chilling tale from her childhood—a story that changed her life forever—a story rooted deep in the folklore of 1950s rural Trinidad. When Celestine was just nine years old, she defied her grandmother’s warnings and visited a woman the village feared. She recounted the legend that was Mama Vashti, a mysterious woman living isolated in the village who possessed supernatural knowledge of remedies and spiritual practices. Though villagers secretly sought her help for love and prosperity spells, they avoided her publicly, whispering that she was a soucoyant—a shape-shifting creature from Caribbean folklore who sheds her skin at night. Whatever she was, she was a woman wrapped in contradiction. Slowly, an unusual friendship and apprenticeship formed between them. Mama Vashti taught Celestine card reading, herbal knowledge, and how to read people’s silences (the kind of knowledge you don’t find in any book). She also revealed she had been cursed in 1898 at age twenty, explaining her ageless appearance. The bond between them was profound and lasting, truly life-shaping in every sense. Celestine carried these lessons across decades and oceans. Listen to this episode to hear her extraordinary story unfold. What did Celestine actually witness during Carnival that she could never fully explain? The Croglin Grange Vampire: Folklore or Forgotten History?
Every so often I come across a story that reminds me why I started researching vampire history in the first place. The legend of the Croglin Grange vampire is one of those rare cases that has enough historical substance to make you pause, yet enough mystery to keep people debating it more than a hundred years later. What makes this story so compelling is it blurs the line between folklore and documented history, refusing to fit into either category. Modern researchers have actually located the property and confirmed a deed placing its name before 1720, though geographical inconsistencies still cloud the full picture. The tale even inspired Alvin Schwartz’s “The Window” from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, proving its grip on our imagination endures. Could a story this specific survive generations purely as invention? I hope you enjoy exploring this one as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Nora's Summer Job & The Vampire of the Upper East Side
Rarely does a vampire encounter story manage to be this quietly unsettling without ever saying the terrifying thing out loud. Nora, a struggling actress in 1980s New York City, takes a live-in caretaker’s job with a man named Casimir van der Broek in his Upper East Side brownstone, and what she finds there will stay with you long after you finish listening. The clues accumulate slowly. A fifteenth-century Latin book about vampires. A portrait authenticated to the seventeenth century, bearing a Dutch frame stamp from 1698. A man who never eats, never sleeps at night, and never steps into daylight. (Casimir’s formal courtesy somehow makes everything more disturbing, not less.) The evidence piles up, piece by piece, each detail adding to the same unthinkable conclusion. Have you ever taken a job or entered a building where the atmosphere felt completely frozen in another century, or where the owner kept hours that defied explanation? My Boss Was a Vampire Rosalie's True Story from Boston's Chinatown
Boston, 1963. Nineteen-year-old Rosalie desperately needed money for college when she accepted a waitressing job at a restaurant tucked away in Chinatown. The owner, the elegant and enigmatic Mrs. Lam, seemed perfectly ordinary. That is until Rosalie noticed young men arriving through the alley entrance and disappearing into her private office. One night, Rosalie accidentally walked in on something she could never explain: a woman with blood-red lips and a glow to her eyes. Mrs. Lam warned Rosalie to never return again but before she did that she gave her money and a carved jade pendant. Decades later, an appraisal of the pendant revealed a detail so inconceivable that Rosalie was forced to reconsider everything she had witnessed in that restaurant. Listen and let me know what you think about Rosalie’s story.
