LET'S TALK ABOUT THE BLACKOUT

Fresh out of a blackout that affected much of Peterborough and the surrounding area for going into a week, Lela catches up on all the things they couldn’t do without power – washing laundry, cleaning dishes, computer work – in this good old regular yap session about what they could do without power. Grab your own crumpled laundry, or fill the sink with hot water, and join Lela in getting some of those missed tasks done, and maybe learn a thing or two to help you out the next time a blackout happens. Taking to the trails of the environment centre on the Trent University campus, Lauren and Lela chat about birds and how to identify them, the times of year you are likely to find wildlife in the area, especially in early spring, and how the landscape evolves as the seasons pass. BUZZING WITH KNOWLEDGE with Emma Dickson

Calling in from across the pond, Lela is joined by Emma who chats about her experience in a very different field of study than Lela’s despite them having nearly the exact same educational background. Emma’s research is in flies. From determining post mortem interval, to what narcotics a person ingested before death, to where the body was moved from, forensic entomology is a wealth of information, and Emma is helping to lay the groundwork. Breaking down the process of identifying fly species, to rearing them, to how a research process can change over time given changing resources, and even to what to do when you finally let yourself leave the lab, this episode gives a raw, in-depth look at PhD work and the effort that goes into it. TABLETOP STORYTELLING with Jacob Clyde

Rolling a +1 on their inspiration die and using that to summon a companion, which uses the help action, Lela gets to chat with Jacob about not only tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) and DMing them, but also using this as a method of storytelling rather than just gameplay. How do tropes help or hurt a story? Is railroading a plot point worth it? How does a level playing field of character weight translate into a novelized story? From the trials and tribulations of trying to create a cohesive storyline when a table of 5 people are telling it, and 1 person is “in control”, to the ups and downs of letting players take the reins of the story and watching magic happen, Jacob breaks down the beauty that can be created if you just trust the process and your players. In an episode very alternatively titled Marc/k 2: The Speed of Improv, Mark Rostrup is back in-studio, this time with his partner in crime, Marc Ludwig. Chatting long- and short- form improv, musical endeavours, muppets, and superheroes, Lela gets to take more of a back seat this episode as Mark and Marc do what they do best and riff off of each other in this equal parts silly and informative episode. UNSUNG THEATRE HEROES

Third times the charm in Lela’s third solo episode of the season, but it’s just in time as they cannot stop thinking about all the people you don’t see in theatre. Stagehands, techies, directors, all of them deserve their flowers and rarely do they get them to the extent they should. Doing their best job to do just that for several productions, along with doing some humble bragging about their old theatre company – Kemptville Youth Musical Theatre Company – Lela attempts to do just that: point out all the hard work they’ve seen people put into shows that so often goes unnoticed, but if it wasn’t there, the whole production would fall apart, if it even happened in the first place. SO WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK?

In the second solo show in a row, Lela takes the opportunity to explain what it is they actually do for work (hint: it’s not radio). Spurred by a holiday season of meeting new people and having to find the quickest, simplest way to answer the question while still being accurate, this episode serves as the one hour breakdown Lela wishes they could have given. Forensic Biology background into lab technology, DNA work, and animal handling, this episode starts at the basics and builds in a (hopefully) easy to understand way so – hopefully – you’ll actually get what they do for work.
