🎙️ "The Voice of the 859: A Conversation with Mark Wehry"
Episode 50 of The FocalFlip Podcast has ARRIVED! Today, I sit down with Mark Wehry, the passionate founder and play-by-play voice behind (859) Sports Radio, a grassroots internet sports webcast dedicated to celebrating Northern Kentucky high school sports.
From mimicking Marty Brennaman on cassette tapes as a 12-year-old to calling hundreds of live games today, Mark’s story is one of relentless passion, family roots, community pride, and a heartfelt comeback.
We dive into how a kid from Covington—armed with a love for the game and a deep respect for athletes at all levels—turned personal loss and a tough setback into a platform that now amplifies the stories of local student-athletes across football, basketball, volleyball, and more.
From being 1 of 8 siblings, to his father passing when he was just 11 years old, to his heartfelt relationship with his once-distant brother Bill..... all of the way to his struggle with imposter syndrome before taking the mic on his own.... Mark, has an inspiring story.
Hear how him and his tight-knit broadcast crew bring unmatched energy and authenticity to every call, and why fans, coaches, and players alike see (859) Sports Radio as more than just a broadcast—it's a lifeline for families, a rallying point for communities, and a celebration of homegrown talent.
Whether you're a sports fan, a parent, or someone chasing a dream later in life, Mark's journey will show you what can happen when passion meets purpose.
