Called 'Secure' Until Someone Objected: Ofsted's Inclusion Scale
Note sull'episodio
Since 10 November 2025, Ofsted no longer gives one overall word for the whole school — every evaluation area, Inclusion included, gets its own grade on a five-point scale: Urgent improvement, Needs attention, Expected standard, Strong standard, Exceptional. We read Ofsted's own inspection toolkit line by line for what each grade actually requires, including the story of the grade that didn't survive contact with feedback — "Secure" was renamed to "Expected standard" before it even launched, because it sounded too reassuring for a middling result. Plus the genuinely vague bit worth knowing about before your SEF gets read: what "sufficient authority within the leadership structure" is actually meant to mean for a SENCo.

Actions for consideration:
- Read your own school's Inclusion self-evaluation against the toolkit's actual wording this half-term — not from memory, against the document.
- Check whether your SENCo has a genuine seat in the meetings where decisions get made, not just a title on the structure chart.
- Review each alternative-provision placement this term against one question: is it still serving this pupil's best interests, or has it become storage?
- Keep a running, working record of pupils whose needs have changed or emerged recently — not a folder built only for inspection.
- Know before your next observation that a single lesson can read as "the pattern" to a visitor — decide how you'd want that lesson understood in context.
