EEF's 5:1 'Magic Ratio': Built On One Small-Scale Study
Note sull'episodio
The second Tuesday of September is when a new class first tests the routine — and what happens in those ten seconds becomes the real routine. We read the EEF's Improving Behaviour in Schools guidance report (all six recommendations) so you don't have to: why the national picture is more stable than the staffroom horror stories (70–76% of teachers say behaviour at their school is good), why Ofsted's recurring finding is inconsistency rather than bad teaching, and the "magic 5:1 ratio" of positive-to-negative interactions — including the small-scale-but-promising caveat the posters leave off. Plus greeting at the door, Establish–Maintain–Restore, daily report cards, and why consistency is a leadership job before it's a classroom one.

Actions for consideration:
- Try it today: greet every pupil by name at the door, one lesson, before anything else changes.
- Track your own praise-to-correction ratio for one lesson — the guidance's "5:1" is promising, not proven, but cheap to test.
- Raise cross-room consistency with whoever owns behaviour in your building this week — recommendation six is a leadership job, not a solo fix.
- Use Establish–Maintain–Restore (≤30 min/week) for the pupils daily sanctions aren't reaching.
- Don't assume zero-tolerance or reward charts are evidence-backed on their own — the report is neutral on the first, inconclusive on the second.
