Brazil: Republica dos Estados Unidos do Brasil 5000 Cruzeiros (5 Cruz Novos Overprint) Banknote (1967)
Note sull'episodio
Issued in 1967 amidst severe hyperinflation and political upheaval, the Brazil Cruzeiros Novos banknote represents a key transitional chapter in Brazilian monetary history following the 1964 military coup d'état. Authorized under Decree-Law No. 1 and brought into circulation via Resolution No. 47, the note was created by overstamping existing 5000 Cruzeiros stock printed by the American Bank Note Company with a circular black seal reading "BANCO CENTRAL - 5 CRUZEIROS NOVOS," effectively slashing three zeros to establish a temporary redenominated currency.
The obverse prominently features an idealized, Christ-like portrait of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier ("Tiradentes"), the martyr of the 1789 Inconfidência Mineira, alongside the signatures of central bank president Dênio Chagas Nogueira and finance minister Octávio Gouvêa de Bulhões. The reverse displays a vibrant ruby-red intaglio reproduction of Rafael Falco's 1951 painting "Tiradentes ante o carrasco," depicting Tiradentes before his executioner in a display of patriotic sacrifice. Cataloged as Pick 188b, this short-lived note remained in circulation only until May 1970, making high-grade uncirculated specimens and rare asterisk replacement notes highly prized collectibles in Latin American numismatics today.
