What does it mean to be bought back from hopelessness? Today we conclude the beautiful story of Ruth. On a dark threshing floor, Ruth appeals to Boaz to act as her "kinsman-redeemer"—a legal protector who can buy back her family's lost land and secure their future. Through a righteous legal transaction at the city gate, Boaz redeems her, bringing Naomi’s family back from the brink of extinction and securing a place in the lineage of King David and King Jesus. In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses this exact heart of protection to describe Himself. He is not a hireling who runs away when danger comes; He is the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep by name and willingly lays down His life to keep them safe.
