This Stanford study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry (2026), tackles this challenge by exploring a novel pharmacological strategy: using low-dose buprenorphine to extend ketamine's benefits.

Researchers discovered that ketamine's magic might rely on the brain's mu-opioid receptor pathways, not just the glutamate system. Buprenorphine, a partial mu-opioid agonist, gently stimulates these pathways, acting like a "trellis" to support new neural connections formed by ketamine.
