The HMS Birkenhead

In this episode of Shipwreck Tales, Graeme Hill is joined by maritime writer John McCrystal to revisit the 1852 wreck of HMS Birkenhead, a British troop ship whose loss off the coast of South Africa became one of the most enduring stories in naval history. Together, they explore how a routine voyage turned catastrophic, how discipline and sacrifice gave rise to the phrase “women and children first”, and how the tragedy became mythologised as the “Birkenhead Drill” a symbol of courage in the face of almost certain death.
