From the darkened streets of Gotham to the land of the rising sun, there's only one Dark Knight... actually there are several and about five or six of them are in this movie alone, but its Batman time baby and he is bringing the ambiance. And one of Batman's strangest films since 1997, Bruce Wayne gets his isekai on and takes a trip back to historical Japan. Joining him are some of his most famed sidekicks (except any of the Batgirls, or girl characters in general) and his most notable nemeses. You know, like Gorilla Grodd. It's a fast paced show with radical character redesigns, an enlightened attitude on localization, and dubious mech action. In 1998, Studio Sunrise created a new property to rival their prior success of Gundam. Set in the open frontier of space, framed like the mythic outlaw age of the Wild West, Cowboy Bebop was an epic depicting the adventures of small crew in a large universe, effortlessly weaving comedy and pathos with action using some of the most gorgeous animation and bombastic music that had been seen on television. We are not talking about that show. Over twenty years later, Netflix decided to try and recreate Sunrise's masterpiece with bloated episode runtimes, scripts they dug out from the dumpster behind the studio, a casting director who I must charitably assume was drunk at the time, and a few million dollars. As a great man once said, we watched it so you don't have to. Three episodes in, we are already scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Specifically, the version depicted in an anime based on a videogame based on a tabletop game based off a literary and cinematic trend in the 70s. What better place to start a podcast? The stakes are high. The cast is morally dubious. And the tone couldn't be bleaker. That's without discussing the anime we are covering this week! It's a threat to shake the still-future 90s! Rookie Foxhound operative Solid Snake is dispatched to Africa, where he must infiltrate the rogue state of Outer Heaven run by a mysterious, legendary mercenary (yes, that is a contradiction) and dismantle the ultimate weapon: METAL GEAR. ...But that's just the set up. The real plot is that our main characters, senior operators Sheltered Snipe and Tangent Man, have assigned themselves the vexing the task of completing a 40-ish year old video games. Can these coddled, aging gamers of the Millennial generation withstand a quarter-consuming, no safety rails included, 8-bit as god intended video game? And if they overcome the challenge, will they have anything interesting to say about it? They better, or I don't know how we'll ever get to the Kojima games people actually like!
