WHEN DID 'FREE PALESTINE' BECOME ANTISEMITISM? THE BILLIONAIRE, THE ARTIST, AND THE PRICE OF COMPLICITY
Note sull'episodio
When exactly did "Free Palestine" become antisemitism? They were never the same statement — and the conflation isn't an accident. It's the most effective silencer the powerful have.
This week: Macklemore said "Free Palestine" on Ed Sheeran's tour. Billionaire Robert Kraft, per Macklemore, personally threatened to cancel the entire tour if he stayed. He was removed and barred from Kraft's stadium for "antisemitic rhetoric." A billionaire used his money to strangle an artist off a tour for three words.
But the artists revolted — Finneas and reportedly every opening act walked out in solidarity, giving up the biggest stages of their lives. The headliner, with the most leverage, complied.
I take apart the word game (criticizing a government isn't hating a people), and the harder truth underneath: complicity is a choice. Like the white headliner in the Jim Crow era who keeps performing while his Black tourmate is barred — he may not agree with segregation, but compliance sides with it. Silence, when you have power, is unofficial agreement.
And I hold the standard: oppose antisemitism completely AND believe Palestinians deserve to be free. Both.
