Power of Praying in Jesus’ Name
I know that Jesus is my Savior, my closest companion, and my Redeemer. But in the busyness of life, I sometimes forget to pause and remember the earth-shaking, stone-rolling, resurrection power that His name holds. When it comes to prayer, “in Jesus’ name”isn’t just a “Christianese” formality—it is the very foundation and authority by which we pray!
The Bible tells us that when we pray in the name of Jesus, we are standing on the fullness of who He is. In the gospel of John, Jesus promised His followers, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (14:13–14, niv). And then, in John 16:23–24, Jesus explained, “Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (niv). The emphasis couldn’t be clearer:i n His name. We are not praying based on our own merit, our own strength, or our own goodness. We are praying based on the eternal, unshakable authority of the Son of God.
When we pray in Jesus’ name, we are calling on every part of who He is, and that means every promise, every victory, and every truth. The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians: “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord” (2:10–11, niv). When I pray, I am not asking in my name or by my authority. I am praying under the banner of the resurrected King, the One who conquered death, crushed sin, and holds the keys to eternity.
The name of Jesus is the foundation that gives our prayers their strength.
