Short Prayers Still Matter

When Nehemiah stands before the king, he doesn’t have time for a long, carefully structured prayer. He offers a quick, internal plea right in the middle of a high-pressure moment. Scripture doesn’t record his words, only his trust that God will meet him and help him.

There are several prayers in the Bible like this: brief, urgent, and honest. Sometimes, prayer is nothing more than a sentence whispered under our breath or a silent cry in our chest. The Bible never treats these prayers as less important. God hears them just as fully.

We often assume prayer has to sound long or impressive to be meaningful. We worry about finding the right words or sustaining focus. But Scripture reminds us that prayer is a relationship. God listens not because our prayers say all of the “right” things, but because he loves us and is attentive to our needs.

Short prayers can help us integrate prayer into real life. They slip into moments when long prayers aren’t possible, like before a meeting, during a tense conversation, while waiting for news, or generally as we move through our daily routines. These prayers train us to turn toward God again and again, instead of waiting for ideal conditions.

Similarly, Psalm 86 is filled with simple, direct requests: “Hear me.” “Answer me.” “Guard my life.” These prayers are ordinary and deeply faithful.

A Prayer for In-Between Moments

Ever-present God, I so often rush from one thing to the next, forgetting that you are here in the waiting, the pauses, the small spaces in between. Help me to slow down, to notice, to breathe. Fill these moments with your peace, and remind me that even in the ordinary, you are near. Amen.

Reflect:

  • When do you find yourself praying briefly or instinctively?
  • Do you ever dismiss those prayers as “not enough”?
  • What keeps you from praying in small moments?
