In this profound discussion of Step 1 from the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, Joe McDonald explores the intense loneliness and despair that comes with addiction. Joe delves into the vivid imagery used in the Big Book: “No words can tell of the loneliness and despair I found in that bitter morass of self-pity.” He shares his personal insights, emphasizing the struggle and the feeling of being stuck in quicksand, where any attempt to fight only makes one sink faster.
Reflecting on the experience of hitting rock bottom, Joe asks, “How many of you scrambled? What happens when you struggle in quicksand? You sink faster.” This metaphor illustrates the futility of fighting addiction alone and the need for surrender. Joe highlights a crucial point from the Big Book: “We cease fighting anything or anyone.”
“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.” This first step is a pivotal moment of realization and acceptance, acknowledging the need for a higher power and the support of the recovery community.
