September 27th, 2026 Sermon -- Sharing God's Love, Part III: 'The Need to Share'
It all comes down to this! We've talked enough about love. Now we need to think about how we are going to share it. This is the part of the message that we don't want to hear because it takes work. It takes us doing the uncomfortable thing...talking with other people about Jesus. Whether you're a member of Yorkville UMC or not, this message still applies. All churches need to hear this message. I hope you find it helpful. Please read: Matthew 28:16-20 and Acts 1:1-8 in advance of listening to this message!
September 20th, 2026 Sermon -- Sharing God's Love, Part II: 'Agape Love in the Church'
As we move into the second part of the series reflecting on Yorkville UMC's mission of "Sharing God's Love," the sermon is divided into two parts: Part One digs deeper into agape love, reflecting on its meaning from the Bible as well as from a Wesleyan perspective. We'll continue our exploration of love as an action, not just a feeling. Part Two will look at the times in which love might be difficult to demonstrate because it requires us to confront a brother or sister in Christ. Scripture readings to look at in advance are 1 Corinthians 13 and 2 Peter 4:1-8.
September 13th, 2026 Sermon -- Sharing God's Love, Part I: 'What Is Love?'
I will point out that these next three sermons are a reflection on a mission statement for Yorkville United Methodist Church, where I am currently serving as pastor. While my intended audience is Yorkville, I think all podcast listeners stand to benefit from some reflection on what it means to love others and helping other to learn about Jesus. This first week's message is called What Is Love. I seek to narrow our definition of love to where it pertains to our life of faith. I would recommend reading Matthew 22:34-40 as well as John 13:3-14, 31-35 in advance of listening to the podcast. (I will also confess that I preached a similar series in 2024 but this is the first iteration to make the podcast ;-) .)
August 30th, 2026 Sermon -- Reflections on Matthew 16:21-28
For this week's sermon I reflect on Matthew 16:21-28. We continue right from last week's reading. When we "take up the cross," it is important for us to think about what that means. It means more than we might expect, than we might anticipate. What is the cost of discipleship?
August 23rd, 2026 Sermon -- Reflections on Matthew 16:13-20
This week we will be looking at Matthew 16:13-20 in which Jesus wants to know what the people are saying about him. Who do the people think Jesus is? Who do the disciples think Jesus is? Who do you think Jesus is? If we agree with Peter, that Jesus is the Messiah, are we living in a way that reflect that? If we don't agree then who is Jesus to us?
August 16th, 2026 Sermon -- Reflections on Matthew 15:21-28
This episode I look at Matthew 15:21-28 also known as "Jesus and the Canaanite Woman." When you read the scripture you will notice that Jesus uses some language that seems uncharacteristic for him. This has perplexed scholars throughout the ages. Because the language can get in the way, I spend the first part of the sermon unpacking that. After that we'll focus on the message that healing offers us as we think about who belongs in the Kingdom of God!
August 9th, 2026 Sermon -- Reflections on Matthew 14:22-33
Over the next few weeks I am going to be looking at some readings from the Gospel of Matthew that coordinate with the Revised Common Lectionary for the month of August. This week I will be looking at Matthew 14:22-33. This is the account of Jesus walking on the water and Peter's attempt to walk on water, which starts out well and gets bad. What does this account have to say to us today, especially as it relates to feelings of fear and trust in in our lives?
July 26th, 2026 Sermon -- History of Hymns, Part VI: "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus"
We wrap up this series by looking at a hymn where it was another pastor who inspired the writer (also a pastor) to write the hymn. Reading Ephesians 6:10-18 would make for good preparation!
July 19th, 2026 Sermon -- History of Hymns, Part V: "It Is Well with My Soul"
This week we will focus on the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul." Of the six hymns that we are looking at this year, this is likely the hymn story that we think we know. I thought I did! When I dug deeper, I realized there is much more to the story. Join me for a tail of Christian perseverance despite tragedy!
July 12th, 2026 Sermon -- History of Hymns, Part IV: "Abide with Me"
Episode notes This week we will focus on the hymn "Abide with Me." The account of the Walk to Emmaus, Luke 24:13-35 forms the basis of this hymn. We'll look at the history of the hymn writer, reflect on the Walk to Emmaus, and then break this hymn down verse by verse!
