We often think the hardest part of a difficult family relationship is the other person, their control, their criticism, their refusal to see us as who we have become. So we set a boundary, or in the more painful cases, we go no contact, and we tell ourselves that once the contact stops, the pain will stop too. But the relationship rarely ends where we think it ends. It continues quietly inside us, in the patterns we picked up as children just to stay safe and loved, and in the parts of ourselves we still cannot see even after the phone calls have stopped.
