Negative Thinking · S1EP18 — Shooting the City: Tokyo

It's half past five in the morning, a vending machine hums like a small aquarium, and one of the great photographic cities on earth is about to open its eyes.

Our first city episode. Audio can't show you photographs, but it can walk you through a city the way a photographer walks it, hour by hour, light by light. So today I take you through Tokyo in three chapters. Morning: skip the landmarks and enter the lanes where the city is still in its pajamas, potted-plant jungles, one cat with civic authority, and laundry lines backlit like paper lanterns, because the photograph isn't in the landmark, it's in the laundry line. Day: don't step back from the famous density, organize it, foreground, middle, background, three layers stacked like theatre scenery, plus a pilgrimage through the used-camera floors where every exhibit is for sale and still works. Night: neon with texture, rain that doubles the city, and the lanes where Japan's molten night style was found. The night is not a lighting problem. The night is the subject.

And the real point: every skill travels home. The early hour works on your street. The three layers work at your bus stop. Tokyo is a gym for the eye. You come for the neon. You leave knowing how to see a laundry line.

Get out and shoot: find your Tokyo. The most Tokyo frame your own neighborhood can offer: a laundry line in low light, a corner that stacks into three layers, a machine glowing at dusk. And take the small street you've never entered.

Coming Wednesday: the Leica. A man too sick to carry a camera built a tiny one, and accidentally drew the next hundred years of photography.

I'm Dan. This has been Negative Thinking. New episodes Wednesday and Saturday. Follow wherever you listen.
