Job Ep. 14: Words from the Ashes

Job finally speaks—and what comes out is a lament. In Job chapter 3, he curses the day of his birth, wishing it could be erased from history altogether. In this episode, we walk through the opening verses of Job’s lament, listening carefully to his grief, his poetry, and the deep pain that leads him to wish he had never been born—without ever cursing God himself. Job Ep. 13: The Three Friends

Before Job’s friends ever speak a word, they sit with him in silence for seven days, mourning his unimaginable loss. In this episode, we meet Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar as they arrive to comfort Job—not with explanations, but with presence. Their silent grief marks the end of the prologue and prepares us for the long, difficult conversations that are about to begin. Thanks for listening! Job Ep. 12: The Wife

Job’s suffering turns physical as painful sores cover his body and he sits among the ashes in mourning. Even then, as his wife urges him to curse God and give up, Job responds with words that reveal a deep and steady faith—refusing to accept only good from God while rejecting trouble. Job Ep. 11: A Second Conversation

Job has lost everything—yet God declares that he still holds fast to his integrity. In this episode, we return to the heavenly council for a second conversation between the Lord and the accuser, exploring what “holding fast” really means, who bears responsibility for Job’s suffering, and how the test intensifies as chapter two begins. Job Ep. 10: How Do We Read Job?

How are we supposed to read the book of Job? Is it a record of historical events, a work of inspired wisdom, or something in between? In this episode, we pause at the end of chapter one to explore how genre, biblical references, and ancient storytelling shape the way faithful readers have understood Job—and why the answer may not be as simple as we’d like. Job Ep. 9: Falling to the Ground in Worship

After losing everything in a single day, Job responds in a way that still surprises readers. He mourns deeply, falls to the ground in worship, and speaks words that acknowledge both God’s giving and God’s taking away. In this episode, we slow down and listen carefully to Job’s response at the end of chapter one—and what it reveals about faith, grief, and faithful speech before God. Thanks for listening! Job Ep. 8: The Fallout

In a single day, Job loses everything—his wealth, his servants, and all ten of his children. One messenger after another arrives, each bringing worse news than the last. In this episode, we slow down and sit with the weight of Job 1:13–19, allowing the text to show us just how quickly a faithful man’s world can fall apart. Thanks for listening! Job Ep. 7: The Conversation

Job — Episode 7: The Conversation In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we finally step into the pivotal conversation of Job 1:6–12—the exchange between the Lord and the accuser that sets the entire book in motion. We begin with an illustration from the 1974 film The Conversation, using it to frame how readers of Job are placed in a unique position. Like the listener in the film, we are allowed to overhear a conversation that the main character never hears. We’re given access to information—but not explanations. As we walk carefully through the dialogue, we explore: • What it means for Satan to be “roaming throughout the earth” • The limits of Satan’s power and authority • Why God initiates the discussion about Job • How Job’s righteousness is affirmed directly by the Lord • Satan’s challenge to Job’s motives and faithfulness • The boundaries God places on the test that follows Rather than treating this passage as a cosmic wager or a theological puzzle to solve too quickly, this episode focuses on close reading, narrative movement, and the limits the text itself places on our conclusions. This conversation doesn’t explain suffering—but it does set the stage for everything that comes next. Scripture: Job 1:6–12 (NIV) Thanks for listening! Job Ep. 6: The Satan

Job — Episode 6: The Satan In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we remain in the heavenly courtroom of Job 1:6–12 and turn our attention to one of the most debated figures in the book: the satan. We slow down to examine what the Hebrew word satan actually means, how it functions in the Old Testament, and why the presence of the definite article (“the”) matters for how we understand this character. Along the way, we explore whether this figure should be understood as Satan as we later meet him in the New Testament, or as an accuser functioning within the divine council. We also consider why the precise identity of this figure may not be the main point of the passage, and why the book of Job never returns to him after the opening chapters. Rather than rushing to tidy conclusions, this episode focuses on careful reading, biblical context, and letting the text set the terms of the discussion. This episode helps us read Job 1 more faithfully by paying attention to language, literary function, and theological restraint—especially when the text leaves questions open. Job Ep. 5: The Divine Council

Job — Episode 5: The Divine Council In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we move deeper into Job 1 by shifting the setting from earth to heaven and reading Job 1:6–12. This passage introduces what is often called the divine council—a scene in which heavenly beings present themselves before the Lord and the “business of heaven” is carried out. We take time to slow down and explore what this scene is (and is not), drawing on other biblical passages that give us glimpses of God’s throne room, including Isaiah 6 and 1 Kings 22. Along the way, we ask important questions: • What does the Bible mean by a “divine council”? • Does God actually need counsel from others? • Who are the “sons of God” mentioned in Job 1? • How should we understand God’s authority and delegation in these scenes? Rather than rushing ahead to conclusions, this episode focuses on setting, biblical imagery, and theological framework—helping us read Job 1 more carefully and faithfully before moving on to the conversation that follows.
