Episode 18: Tour of the Gila – Part 1 & 2 Episode 18 takes a unique turn for Leaders of Enchantment as we step into the role of media partner for the 2025 Tour of the Gila, held April 23–27 in Silver City, New Mexico. Our founder, Doug Campbell, was on the ground at this legendary cycling race, capturing stories from athletes, organizers, and key figures behind the scenes. To bring you closer to the action and the people shaping this event, we’re breaking this episode into two parts—each featuring conversations with six inspiring individuals. Part 1 drops Wednesday, May 7, followed by Part 2 on Thursday, May 8. In the 1980s, Mark Richard, a local architect and not really a cyclist, conceptualized the Tour of the Gila bicycle stage race. He knew organizing a bicycle race in Grant County would help to promote southwest New Mexico to travelers. Since 1987, Tour of the Gila has grown to become an iconic American stage race that is renowned across the globe. As a UCI-sanctioned road race, Tour of the Gila is known as the place for pros and elite amateurs to showcase their talent. Olympians like Kristin Armstrong and Mara Abbott adore the Tour of the Gila, and Americans racing on and director World Tour teams appreciate the race’s role in their path to the top. Such professionals include 2023 Vuelta a España winner Sepp Kuss and EF Education-Cannondale Director Sportif Carmen Small. As a USA Cycling-sanctioned road race, Tour of the Gila also attracts amateur cyclists wanting to experience the notorious challenge of the area’s steep and scenic roads while testing their physical limits. By traveling diverse roads and highlighting New Mexico history, Tour of the Gila brings to attention the region’s qualities, which include the landscape that inspired the creation of the Wilderness Act; a robust farming, ranching and mining heritage; an historic military fort; a growing creative community; and an enclave of cyclists who consider Grant County their secret hideaway and dream playground.

EP 17 – DR Marjori Krebs

Dr. Marjori Krebs is a lifelong educator and a Professor at the University of New Mexico in the Department of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership, and Policy. With more than 35 years of experience across K-12 and higher education, she’s served as a social studies teacher, district administrator, university supervisor, and teacher educator—always with a deep commitment to improving how we prepare the next generation of educators. At UNM, Dr. Krebs leads as the Director of Residencies for the College of Education & Human Sciences and coordinates Graduate Licensure Programs in both Elementary and Secondary Education. Her research centers on teacher preparation and support, with a special focus on teacher residencies, project-based service-learning, and co-teaching models. Marjori’s recent work has taken her to the Zuni Pueblo, where she’s helping build culturally relevant pathways for future educators. She holds degrees from the University of Oklahoma (BA), The Ohio State University (MA), and Bowling Green State University (EdD). Her impact is felt not only in classrooms but in the communities she serves—always grounded in the belief that great teachers build great futures.

EP 16 TEASER – CASH ALLRED

Cash Allred is a principal on the investment team at Antler, where he helps identify, fund, and support the next generation of visionary founders. His passion for entrepreneurship and technology has been a driving force throughout his career, shaping his unique approach to venture capital. Before joining Antler, Cash was a tech-focused investor at Sweater, the first early-stage VC fund accessible to the public, where he played a key role in democratizing venture investment. Prior to that, he gained hands-on experience in both technical and investment roles, working as a data engineer at Lucid Software and as an impact investment associate at an early-stage impact fund. With a background that bridges technical expertise and investment acumen, Cash has developed a keen eye for identifying high-potential startups and guiding them toward meaningful growth. He holds a BS in Information Systems from Brigham Young University, where he honed his ability to analyze complex data and leverage technology to drive strategic decisions. Beyond his work in venture capital, Cash is deeply interested in the intersection of technology, impact, and the evolving landscape of startup funding. His journey reflects a commitment to pushing boundaries—whether it’s through investing in disruptive technologies or rethinking how venture capital can be more inclusive.

EP 15 - RUSSELL BAKER

Russell Baker, born in Ames, Iowa, grew up with a deep passion for music, performing, and the arts. He discovered dance while pursuing a B.A. in English from Vassar College and later earned his M.F.A. in Ballet Teaching and Choreography from the University of Utah. Russell's professional dance career spanned a decade with the Kansas City Ballet, where he performed a wide range of roles—principal, soloist, corps de ballet, and character parts—showcasing his versatility and dedication to the craft. In 2001, Russell attended NDI New Mexico’s teacher training program, Teaching Excellence®. Before relocating to Santa Fe, he taught with the Kansas City Ballet's R.O.A.D. program (Reach Out and Dance). Inspired by NDI New Mexico's mission to use dance to inspire and engage children, Russell moved to New Mexico to share his love of dance and the arts. He spent two years directing NDI New Mexico’s North Program in the Española Valley, followed by two years leading the Santa Fe Program, where he wrote and directed memorable End-of-the-Year Events, including *Route 66: Legends of the Road* and *Got Jazz!* His commitment and artistic vision led to his appointment as Artistic Director, overseeing teacher training and the artistic quality of NDI New Mexico's statewide programs. In February 2008, Russell became NDI New Mexico's Executive Director. His leadership blends a strong foundation in the arts with strategic nonprofit management. With over a decade of executive experience, Russell has played a pivotal role in program development and delivery, teacher training, marketing, and fundraising efforts—including managing an annual fund, a capital campaign, and an endowment/planned giving campaign. He also guided facility renovations, ensuring NDI New Mexico's programs have the space and resources to thrive. Russell firmly believes in the transformative power of the arts, striving to create meaningful, relevant experiences that empower young people to realize their fullest potential.

Once the Lobos' all-time leading scorer, he transitioned into commercial real estate, earning recognition for facilitating one of Albuquerque’s largest deals—a $100 million portfolio sale with CBRE. Now a senior advisor at SVN/Walt Arnold Commercial Brokerage, Hunter continues to shape the local investment landscape. Expanding his impact, Hunter is stepping into the venture capital space as a general partner at OneTen Capital. Focused on fostering women- and minority-owned startups, he aims to bridge the gap in access to capital for underserved entrepreneurs. His personal experiences navigating financial barriers fuel his commitment to creating opportunities for others. In addition to his business ventures, Hunter remains connected to his basketball roots as a Lobo game announcer for KKOB-AM. EP 13 TEASER - DR. SHELLY GUENIG

Dr. Shelly Gruenig is the Founder and Executive Director of R4 Creating, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of educators and students through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. She is a speaker, author, STEM entrepreneur, award-winning robotics coach, and homeschool mother. Her passion is to help kids find their people and launch their lives. Her team, R4Robotics, is a 12-time state champion, 5-time regional champion, and has won the prestigious Google Community International Award with VEX robotics. Dr. Gruenig holds a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Park Administration from Western Illinois University, a Master of Education in College Student Personnel from Loyola University Chicago, and a PhD in Workforce Education from Southern Illinois University. In addition to her work with R4 Creating, Dr. Gruenig co-hosts the STEM Southwest Podcast and a STEM segment on CBS, KRQE. She has also worked with corporate clients, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Sun Microsystems, and the Brunswick Corporation. In 1998-1999, she led the career centers to transition workers at Levi Strauss & Co into new careers and establish businesses leveraging private and public resources.

EP12 TEASER - RAPHAEL “RAFE” MARTINEZ

Raphael Martinez is an Executive Director at Albuquerque Sign Language Academy based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Previously, Raphael was a Director of Student Support at ACE Leadership High School and also held positions at West Mesa High School. Raphael received a Master of Secondary Education and Teaching degree from The University of New Mexico. Raphael “Rafe” Martinez is a 30-plus-year educator who has experienced a variety of leadership opportunities. As a former classroom English teacher, head coach of multiple sports teams, dean of students, and current head of school for the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy (ASLA), Rafe has grown to understand and embrace the importance of strong, effective leadership in pursuit of organizational excellence. Taking several profound lessons from his diverse leadership experiences, Rafe has led the ASLA to national acclaim. The ASLA is regarded as a national leader in deaf and special education reform. It is the only state-certified ASL-English Dual Language School in the United States, serving deaf and hearing students through a highly inclusive and supportive learning program. Additionally, the ASLA works closely with several national post-secondary partners to continually develop its innovative program. Partners include Penn State University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Arizona, New Mexico Highlands University, McLean Hospital (Harvard), and, of course, the University of New Mexico.
