The Life of David - Part 10, James Clarke

What happens when the rightful King has been chosen—but most people refuse to recognise him? Saul is dead and David is God’s anointed King. You might expect the whole of Israel to rally behind him. Instead, the nation splits in two. Rival kings, rival kingdoms and eventually a bloody civil war emerge, and everyone must decide where their allegiance lies. Yet while others reach for violence, revenge and human strength, David takes a very different path—and slowly his kingdom grows stronger while the rival kingdom fades away. In this episode, we explore how David’s kingdom points forward to the Kingdom of Jesus: a Kingdom that may sometimes appear small, but which cannot ultimately be defeated. And we discover an important challenge for those who belong to it: it isn’t enough simply to be on the right side—we must also follow the way of our King. Bible passages: 2 Sam. 2:1-17, 2 Samuel 3:1

The Life of David - Part 9, James Clarke

What does it reveal about you when the person who has made your life miserable finally falls? For years, Saul had hunted David, driven him from his home and repeatedly tried to kill him. Now Saul is dead, and the throne David had been promised is suddenly within reach. This should have been the moment David had been waiting for. Yet his response is extraordinary: he mourns. In this episode, we explore David’s haunting lament, “How the mighty have fallen,” and what his response to Saul’s death reveals about his character. David refuses to rejoice over his enemy’s downfall, chooses to remember the good even in a deeply flawed man, and leaves Saul’s judgement to God. Saul’s tragic fall also reveals one of the great themes running through Samuel: the mighty can be brought low, and the lowly raised up. It is both a warning about pride and a reminder of our need for a better King—a King who is mighty yet humble, and who will never fall: Jesus Christ.

The Life of David - Part 8, James Clarke

In this episode, David finds himself in a real pickle. Exhausted from years of running from Saul, he makes the momentous decision to leave Israel and seek refuge among his old enemies, the Philistines. It solves one problem, but creates a whole series of new ones. Before long, David is living in enemy territory, trying to remain loyal to Israel while serving a Philistine king, and eventually facing the horrifying prospect of marching into battle against his own people. Then everything falls apart: Ziklag is burned, his family is taken captive, and even his own men turn against him. At one of the lowest moments of his life, David “finds strength in the Lord his God.” It’s a dramatic story about fear, difficult decisions, divided loyalties, impossible situations—and the extraordinary grace of God when life becomes a complicated mess.

The Life of David - Part 7, James Clarke

What do you do when the shortcut to everything you've been promised lies right in front of you? David faces exactly that question as he stands over the sleeping King Saul, with the kingdom seemingly only one spear thrust away. This episode, focusing on 1 Samuel 26, explores one of the great tests of David's character, revealing why he refused to grasp power by sinful means, what it means to trust God when justice is delayed, and how David's story prepares us for Jesus Christ, the King who chose the path of suffering before glory.

The Life of David - Part 6, James Clarke

In this episode, we explore one of the most dramatic moments in David's life as he is given the perfect opportunity to kill King Saul, the man who has spent years hunting David down. Hidden in a cave at En Gedi, David must choose between revenge and trusting God. Why does he refuse to strike Saul down when everyone around him urges him to? This passage explores justice, mercy, forgiveness, and what it means to leave vengeance in God's hands.

The Life of David - Part 5, James Clarke

In this episode of our series on the life of David, we follow David into one of the darkest seasons of his life as he is driven from his home and relentlessly pursued by King Saul, despite having done nothing to deserve it. Rather than surrender to resentment, wallow in self-pity or become a quitter, David wrestles honestly with God in prayer. Looking at 1 Samuel 19 and the Psalms written during this time, this episode offers encouragement and advice for anyone facing injustice or hardship, showing how David's example teaches us to trust God, pour out our hearts to him, and wait with hope for his deliverance.

The Life of David - Part 4, James Clarke

The Power Triangle. In this fourth episode of our series on the life of David, we continue the story after David’s victory over Goliath and explore how those around him respond to his growing success and popularity. The passage focuses on the contrasting reactions of Jonathan and King Saul. While Jonathan, Saul’s son and heir to the throne, responds with humility, covenant friendship, and loyalty toward David, Saul becomes increasingly jealous, fearful, and hostile as he realises that the Lord is with David. The episode examines themes of friendship, power, jealousy, humility, and trust in God. We see Jonathan willingly step aside rather than compete with David, while Saul clings desperately to power and repeatedly tries to destroy him. Along the way, the sermon reflects on how people respond when others succeed, the dangers of selfish ambition, and the call to live humbly and at peace with others. Ultimately, the story points forward to Jesus Christ, the true King who did not grasp for power, but humbled himself and became a servant for the sake of others.

The Life of David - Part 3, James Clarke

In this third episode of our series on the life of David, we explore the famous story of David and Goliath from 1 Samuel 17. Looking beyond the familiar tale, we discover how this dramatic battle is an example of “champion warfare,” where one representative fights on behalf of many. As Saul and the army of Israel shrink back in fear, David steps forward in faith, trusting not in human strength but in the power of God. The episode examines what this teaches about dependence on God, true leadership, and courage rooted in faith. Most importantly, it shows how David points forward to Jesus Christ, our greater Champion, who fought and won the ultimate victory over sin, death, and Satan on behalf of his people.

The Life of David - Part 2, James Clarke

In this episode, we continue the series on the life of David, focusing on 1 Samuel 16:1–13 and the moment God chooses David to be king. As Samuel is sent to Bethlehem to anoint a new ruler, the passage highlights how God rejects outward appearance and instead looks at the heart, choosing the youngest and least expected of Jesse’s sons. The episode explores what it means to be “a man after God’s own heart,” and contrasts human ways of judging leaders with God’s deeper perspective. It also draws out the theme of God lifting up the humble and points forward to Jesus as the ultimate King who perfectly embodies humility and obedience.

The Life of David - Part 1, James Clarke

In this opening episode of our series on David, we explore the early life of Israel’s future king and discover why God chose an unlikely shepherd boy from Bethlehem. Against the backdrop of Israel’s spiritual decline and the failure of King Saul, David stands out not because of outward strength or status, but because of his heart. We look at David’s faithfulness in the small things, his trust in God, and his understanding of the Lord as his true Shepherd. Ultimately, David’s story points us forward to Jesus, the perfect Shepherd-King who leads, protects, and lays down his life for his people.
