What did piracy look like before the infamous pirates of the Golden Age? In this episode, we examine Jean de Léry’s eyewitness account of an encounter with opportunistic sailors who turned their attention toward two English merchant ships. Through Léry’s story, we explore the early history of piracy, the religious and political tensions of the sixteenth-century Atlantic, and the challenges historians face when studying people who left behind very little of their own paper trail.
