You can also find it on my website at SincereLifeCoach.org. A little about Pastor Will... On Sunday, October 22, the congregation of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church called Pastor William R. Starkweather to be their next pastor. He has accepted the call and will begin his journey with St. Mark’s in December. Originally from Marietta, Georgia, Pastor Starkweather holds a Human Services degree from Kennesaw State University. He has worked with at-risk youth at the Children’s Stabilization and Assessment Center in Canton, Georgia, before pursuing his call to ministry. After graduating from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, he served in New York’s Hudson Valley before moving to Texas, where he became an active leader in interfaith work, addiction recovery, and prison ministry. Beyond ministry, Pastor Will enjoys playing guitar, writing, baking cheesecakes, and spending time with his wife, Julie, and their three children. Sincere Jr. for a powerful Black History Month Special – Bible Study Edition as we uncover the untold stories of the Sugar Land 95 and the Convict Leasing System—a dark chapter in American history that shaped our communities in ways many still do not fully understand. 📢 Special Guest: Bruce Lemmie – a historian dedicated to preserving the history of the Sugar Land 95, bringing insight into the legacy of forced labor and its lasting effects on our community. What Are the Sugar Land 95? The Sugar Land 95 refers to the remains of 95 African American men who were discovered in an unmarked burial ground in 2018 during a construction project in Sugar Land, Texas. These men were victims of the Convict Leasing System, a form of neo-slavery that flourished after the abolition of chattel slavery. The system allowed state governments to lease prisoners—most of whom were Black men arrested on minor or fabricated charges—to private companies for backbreaking labor, particularly in industries like sugar and railroad construction. What Was the Convict Leasing System? After the Civil War and the passing of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery except as punishment for a crime, many Southern states exploited this loophole. Black men were disproportionately arrested for vague offenses like vagrancy, loitering, or failing to prove employment and were then leased to private industries, forced to work under brutal conditions. Many died from exhaustion, malnutrition, and abuse, their bodies buried in unmarked graves—forgotten by history. This discussion will not only explore the historical injustices faced by African Americans but also provide a faith-based perspective on remembrance, resilience, and justice. Pastor Sincere and Judge Teana Watson (Fort Bend County Court at Law 5) explore critical issues, real-life experiences, and solutions for a more just system. Meet Judge Teana Watson Judge Teana Watson, a native Houstonian, is a proud graduate of the Jesse H. Jones High School Vanguard Program. She studied as a Sloan Fellow at Princeton University and graduated with honors from Fisk University in 1986. After interning at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, she earned her law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. Returning to Texas, Watson began her legal career in 1991 at the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, later serving as Chief Prosecutor of the Juvenile Division. In 1996, she opened her own law firm, representing clients in state and federal courts on criminal and civil matters. She also served as a municipal judge in Stafford (2002-2010) and founded T.V. Watson Law, PLLC in 2014, a full-service firm with over 65 years of combined legal experience. Judge Watson has presented papers and lectured for the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and other legal organizations. She has served on multiple legal boards, including the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Education Institute and the Criminal Defense Lawyers Project. She is a past Vice President of the Fort Bend County Criminal Lawyers Association. Beyond her legal career, Watson is dedicated to public service, charitable causes, and community engagement. She has been a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church in Missouri City for over 20 years. She and her husband, Ricardo Watson, Sr., are proud parents of Ricky (Hampton University graduate) and Cordell (St. Mary’s University student). Racism & the Criminal Justice System Racial disparities in policing, sentencing, and incarceration continue to impact communities of color. Black and Latino individuals face higher arrest rates, harsher sentences, and systemic barriers within the legal system. Addressing these injustices requires policy changes, legal reforms, and equity-driven solutions.
