The average process goes: feel off, see a mental health professional, get diagnosed, and then prescribed treatment whether that is a medication, therapeutic intervention, or both and so on and so on. The beginning of that process typically involves something called informed consent. Informed consent is meant to give clients all of the information they need about the process so that they can choose whether or not they want to engage in the process despite the potential negative impact. Standard practice for informed consent in mental health practices is severely lacking, which is directly contributing to individual and societal harm.
