In this powerful episode of Drum Circle News, part of the Home for Humanity: One Home Journey series, we sit down with Māui Solomon, a cultural leader of the Moriori people of Rēkohu (Chatham Islands).

The Moriori story is one of peace, tragedy, and resilience:

Guided by Nunuku’s Law, Moriori chose a path of non-violence centuries before colonization0.

In 1835, Moriori faced a devastating invasion and enslavement — two Māori Tribes from Taranaki — Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama — invaded the Chathams

Colonial myths of Moriori “extinction” silenced their identity for generations.

Today, Moriori are leading a cultural and spiritual renaissance, reviving their language, traditions, and rightful place in Aotearoa and the world.
