The Grocery Store Checkout Lane Puzzle

Hello,

Welcome to Cager’s Coffee Break!

Have you ever walked up to the checkout lanes at a store and carefully studied them like you're making a major financial decision?

You look left.

You look right.

“That line has six people. This one only has two. I'm going over here!”

You confidently roll your cart into the shorter line.

And that's when everything stops.

The person at the register needs a price check.

Then a coupon won't scan.

Then somebody has to call a manager.

Meanwhile, you look over at the line you almost chose, and people are flying through it like they're boarding an express train.

The person who was six carts behind you is already walking out the door!

And you start thinking, “Should I switch?”

Don't do it.

Because the minute you switch lines, that line will stop moving too.

Sometimes life feels exactly like that. We look around and it seems as though everybody else is moving ahead while we're standing still.

But just because somebody else's journey appears faster doesn't mean yours is going wrong.

Coffee certainly doesn't rush its journey.

After coffee cherries are harvested and the beans inside are processed and dried, green coffee may spend time being stored and transported before it ever reaches a roaster. During that journey, protecting the beans from excessive moisture, heat, and other conditions is important because green coffee can change before roasting if it isn't handled properly.

In other words, even when the coffee appears to be doing absolutely nothing, how it's being cared for still matters.

That's a pretty good reminder for us.

Not every season of life is going to look productive from the outside.

Sometimes you're waiting.

Sometimes you're recovering.

Sometimes you're learning.

Sometimes you're simply trying to figure out what comes next.

That doesn't mean the time is being wasted.

We have a habit of comparing our progress with everybody else's.

They got there faster.

They accomplished more.

Their opportunity came first.

But life isn't a checkout-line competition.

Your journey belongs to you.

So instead of constantly looking over at somebody else's line, pay attention to what's happening in your own.

Enjoy the people around you.

Be grateful for the progress you've already made.

And trust that standing still for a little while doesn't mean you'll be standing there forever.

Eventually, that price check is going to come through.

The coupon will scan.

The manager will arrive.

And that line will start moving again.

Until then, if somebody happens to walk by selling Cager’s Coffee, flag them down.

Because if we're going to wait, we might as well wait with a good cup of coffee in our hands, and remember to keep brewing kindness one cup at a time! Come visit us at www.cagerscoffeehut.com.
