Death Valley: Timothy Spall, Gwyneth Keyworth, and the British Crime Comedy Worth a Second Look

This week’s spotlight is on Death Valley, a 2025 series that surprised me. Timothy Spall delivers a dual-role performance. Gwenyth Keyworth plays DS Janie Mallowan, a quirky, emotionally complex detective whose career is more chaos than control. Expectations needed realignment. But once viewed through a comedic lens, Death Valley becomes surprisingly watchable. The chemistry between Chapel and Mallowan drives the heart of the show. We’ll talk about Spall’s legendary career, Keyworth’s scene-stealing chops, and why British writers have storytelling in their DNA.. So if you brushed off Death Valley too quickly, maybe give it another go. You might just find humor where you expected homicide.

Dept. Q: Matthew Goode and Edinburgh's Most Compelling Cold Case Drama

This week on The British TV Watchlist, we head to Edinburgh for Dept.Q, a cold-case crime drama that blends emotional depth with slow-burning suspense. Together, they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a local prosecutor, uncovering dark conspiracies and personal demons along the way. We explore why this unlikely trio resonates, how British casting realism beats American polish, and why outsider detectives remain a genre goldmine.

Welcome to British TV Watchlist: Cozy Mysteries, Detective Dramas, and Why British TV Wins

Episode 1 kicks off a dream of mine to produce this podcast about my favorite flavor of TV programming-The British drama. This includes mysteries, police procedurals, gritty detective shows, and more. And it's not just programs from England. It includes the entire UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and even parts of Europe. In my mind, most of the shows trump most of what Hollywood produces. Let me introduce myself. My name is Michael T. I used to be a radio DJ in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, I do voiceover work, write, program an online radio station, and I produce this podcast. Over the last several years, I've fallen in love with British TV. Aside from sports (mainly basketball and American football), the only TV I watch is British. This podcast is for the millions like me who have discovered the excellent, entertaining world of British TV.
