Freeport’s Indonesia setback jolts copper: prices pop, supply tightens
What happened
Freeport-McMoRan ($FCX) cut Q3 guidance after a deadly mud-flow accident at its Grasberg Block Cave mine in Indonesia. Copper futures jumped ~3.8% to about $4.82/lb on tighter supply signals.

Grasberg is among the world’s largest copper mines, and the disruption flips near-term market balance toward deficit, lifting price expectations into 2025–2026.
