Calories have a terrible reputation, and it's costing us. This week, I make the case that calories deserve a PR revamp: they're not the enemy, they're your body's life force. I'll get into why almost everyone under-counts what they eat, why that's a design feature of being human rather than a personal failing, and why it's actually good news if fat loss comes down to calories and not your hormones. Compassion-first, shame-free, and backed by the research. The research (sources) Lichtman et al. (1992) — obese subjects under-reported intake by ~47% and over-reported exercise by ~51%; metabolic rates were normal. NEJM. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1454084/ Champagne et al. (2002) — registered dietitians under-reported by 223 cal/day; non-experts by 429 cal/day. J Am Diet Assoc. https://www.jandonline.org/article/S0002-8223(02)90316-0/abstract Bajunaid et al. (2025) — largest doubly-labeled-water dataset to date; the general population misreports intake by ~27%. Nature Food. https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-024-01089-5 Storz & Ronco (2025) — among 18,150 adults, dieters under-reported nearly twice as often as everyone else (23% general population vs. 44% of low-carb dieters). Current Developments in Nutrition. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12538426/ Tooze et al. (2004) — fear of negative evaluation was a top predictor of under-reporting, especially in women. Am J Clin Nutr. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15113717/ A note before you listen This episode talks about calories directly, including the small bites and tastes that add up over a day. It's meant to take the fear out of the subject, not add to it. But if numbers are a tender spot for you right now, take what serves you and leave the rest.
48. "I Know What to Do, I Just Don't Do It": How to Create Your Own Motivation
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co Want more of me? Join my email newsletter ❤️ IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! You dominate everything else in your life: your career, your finances, your workouts. So why does food feel like the one place your willpower goes to die? This episode unpacks the sentence I hear more than any other: "I know what to do, I just can't do it." Spoiler: it's not a discipline problem, and there's nothing wrong with you. I get into why fear and shame spark the kind of motivation that burns hot and dies in three days, the difference between extrinsic and high-quality intrinsic motivation, and a field of study most people have never heard of that lets you create drive on purpose instead of waiting around for it to show up. I walk through "promotional" tools (yes, daydreaming counts), the brain glitch that makes your goals uninteresting when faced with temptation, and the two big questions that help you discover your Deep Why. If your motivation keeps ghosting you like a bad-boy crush, this one's for you.
47. You're Not Failing, You're Just Human: The Truth About Self-Trust and Fat Loss
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co Want more of me? Join my email newsletter ❤️ IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! In this episode of Body Like You, I'm talking about self-trust, and why the way most of us define it is quietly keeping us stuck in the yo-yo cycle with food and fat loss. I break down why your brain treats the fear of fat gain and the disappointment of past dieting as a survival threat, and how that fear fuels self-sabotage. Because if failure feels inevitable, you get to quit before you can be hurt again. Then I reframe what self-trust actually is. This episode is for anyone caught in yo-yo dieting, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, or the shame that lands the second you're not perfect with food. If you've been afraid to even start because you're sure you'll mess it up, I hope this gives you a big exhale. Happy eating!46. It's Ridiculously Easy to Eat Enough Protein (Yes, even for you)
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition Want more of me? Join my email newsletter ❤️ "It's impossible for normal people to hit 100 grams of protein." "Protein's overrated. You only need 50 or 60 grams." I've been hearing these stories everywhere lately, and in this episode I lovingly call them what they are: horseshit. The truth is it has never been easier in human history to eat enough protein. I cover why it matters so much (muscle, satiety, blood sugar, aging with strength), just how simple it actually is to get enough. And then the part nobody else talks about: the honest, slightly uncomfortable things you might have to change to make it happen. This one will either shift how you think about it completely, or gently piss you off. Maybe both.44. Debriefing: The Brain Tool That Ends the Restrict-Binge Cycle
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition Enjoying the podcast? I'd love to hear from you! Ever ended a weekend of overeating by promising you'll "start over on Monday"? In this episode of Body Like You, I teach debriefing, the brain tool that breaks the restrict-binge cycle without shame. You'll learn why "fix-it mode" keeps you stuck in yo-yo dieting and emotional eating, how undereating during the day drives nighttime overeating, and how to look back at food mistakes with curiosity instead of self-blame. If you struggle with emotional eating, binge eating, all-or-nothing thinking, or staying consistent with fat loss, this one's for you.
43. Obstacle Prediction: How to Solve Food Problems Before They Happen
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! In this episode of Body Like You, I'm teaching one of the simplest and most powerful brain tools I know: obstacle prediction. It's something I use in my own eating and work on with every client, and it's the difference between white-knuckling your way through the week and calmly solving food problems before they ever happen. I start with why perfectionism is such a miscalculation with food, and why eating well and fat loss have far more to do with caretaking than achieving. Then I walk through obstacle prediction itself: how to run the tape forward and use your rational brain before you're hungry, tired, and emotional. I break down the three categories of obstacles I see get in people's way over and over: your own thoughts and emotions (including the fear of fat gain), logistical obstacles, and people pleasing. If you struggle with emotional eating, nighttime overeating, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, or staying on track with fat loss when life gets busy, this episode will help you stop being ambushed by the same obstacles and start solving them in advance, without shame. Next week we'll cover the flip side of this tool: debriefing. Happy eating!
42. How to Be A C Student: Why Perfectionists Don't Lose Weight
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! If you've ever gone all-in on a diet, nailed it for two weeks, then quit the second you slipped, this episode explains why. I tell the story of the engineering weed-out class that nearly broke me (and kicked off a five-year emotional eating habit) and use it to unpack the real reason perfectionists struggle with fat loss: you can't tolerate being a beginner. All-or-nothing thinking, the need to make an "A" on every attempt, and the shame that lands the moment you're not perfect are exactly what trap you in the start-over cycle. I'll show you why self-compassion is the missing skill that makes weight loss actually stick, and why letting yourself be a "C student" with food might be the kindest, most effective thing you ever do for your body. This one's for anyone who's successful everywhere except their relationship with food and the way they feel in their body.
41. Radical Responsibility for Feeding Yourself
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! In this episode of Body Like You, I’m talking about what I call radical responsibility for feeding yourself: the decision to stop letting busy schedules, restaurants, family preferences, social pressure, and last-minute hunger make your food choices for you. I share how failing to plan my meals once left me relying on drive-throughs and restaurant food multiple times a day, and how learning to think about food in advance helped me lose 80 pounds of body fat and maintain that loss. You’ll learn six practical principles for taking greater ownership of your nutrition, including packing simple meals when you leave home, speaking up at restaurants, navigating other people’s opinions, and learning from imperfect eating decisions without shame or blame. This isn’t about perfect meal prep, rigid dieting, or never eating for pleasure. It’s about building self-trust, planning for predictable hunger, and treating feeding yourself as an essential form of body care. If you struggle with yo-yo dieting, emotional eating, inconsistent meal planning, frequent takeout, or staying on track with your fat loss goals when life gets busy, this episode will help you stop feeling powerless and start creating a nutrition routine that works in real life.
40. Why Eating Clean Is An Emotional Crutch That Isn't Helping You Lose Body Fat
For 1:1 coaching inquiries, find me: Web: framenutrition.co Email: aimee@framenutrition.co IG: @coachaimee.nutrition And I'd love to hear from you! In this episode of Body Like You, Aimee talks about the emotional tension around calories, clean eating, and fat loss. Many people come to fat loss after years of trying to eat perfectly, avoid the wrong foods, and work harder in the gym, only to feel stuck, ashamed, and more confused than ever. Aimee explores why clean eating can feel emotionally comforting, especially when body shame is present, and why hearing that fat loss comes down to energy balance can feel like an accusation, even when it isn’t one. She breaks down how nutrition misinformation, food rules, body dissatisfaction, and shame can keep people spinning their wheels instead of making meaningful progress. This episode is for anyone who has tried to lose fat by eating clean, cutting out foods, chasing the latest wellness advice, or trying to purify their diet, while still feeling like their body won’t change. You’ll learn why calories matter for fat loss, why your love of delicious food is not a character flaw, and how a more compassionate approach can help you stop fighting your body and start working with reality.39.
