The vineyard had everything it needed and still failed to produce the fruit it was meant to produce. That lands hard because it’s possible to have opportunity, tools, knowledge, and even a good reputation without becoming the kind of person those gifts were supposed to shape. Paul tells me where to put my mind: what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worth praising. Jesus makes the point even sharper—what has been entrusted to me is supposed to bear fruit. I don’t want to confuse having been given a lot with having done something good with it. The question isn’t only what I own, know, or manage. It’s what is growing because I was trusted with it.
