1 CORINTHIANS 9:16-19, 22-27 PSALM 84:3, 4, 5-6, 12 LUKE 6:39-42
Taken together, that's a picture of somebody giving up his own rights to reach other people — Paul had every right to be paid for preaching and gave it up anyway, becoming weak to the weak and all things to all people, not out of weakness but strategy in service of the gospel. The Psalm sits alongside that with a gentler image of the same trust: even a sparrow finds a home near the altar, without needing to earn the place. And Luke's warning brings the whole thing back down to something uncomfortably practical — it's easy to imagine yourself qualified to fix somebody else's small fault while a much larger one sits in plain view in your own eye, unexamined. Paul's self-denial and Luke's self-examination are really the same discipline, aimed in two different directions.
