Ep. 39. Pro Roadie Matt Zimmer

Esplicito
Well - we did it - an on the bike interview! Matt Zimmer, a pro roadie riding with the Project Echelon Team, lives in Des Moines - and is a super good dude -he’s great to have in the local group rides - from the break legs off Tuesday night world championships to the friendlier (but not slow) Saturday morning rides - so a few weeks ago I asked if he’d like to join me on a ride and do an interview during a ride - he enthusiastically agreed - with the caveat that if it didn’t work, we’d have an old school sit down conversation indoors - so we got together for a ride on a beautiful Monday late afternoon, clipped on some microphones, stuck a recorder in my back pocket - and went out for a ride - so it’s a bit weird - we go through some tunnels (and you can really tell!), had to pause to wait for some cars to pass at intersections - and of course, my mic sucked - but you’re here to listen to Matt, not me, so settle in and enjoy my recent ride and conversation with Matt Zimmer as we talk all about his life as a cyclist and the health of cycling in the U.S. Follow Matt on instagram at Matt.Zimmer and connect with Project Echelon online at www.projectechelonracing.com. Cyclocross Legend Sven Nys with guest host Zach Schuster

When I started this little weekly audio adventure - one of the things that I was excited about was sharing some old stuff that lives on my hard drive - I’ve been covering the U.S. Cyclocross World Cup races since 2017 and I’ve got some old interviews and such just collecting dust - and I was excited to bring them out and give them new life - I’ve already shared a few, like my 2017 interview with Katie Compton and my 2021 discussions with Gage Hecht, Lance Haidet and Becca Farringer. That interview was actually Courtenay McFadden - which brings me to another point - I always wanted to be open to have guest hosts, like Courtenay - and Lisa Carponelli who interviewed Heather Paskovich after her win in the Race Across the West! As you may have figured out by now - for this episode, I’m sharing an old interview from 2017, when Zach Schuster and I interviewed Sven Nys at the Trek CX Cup from deep inside the Trek factory in the bike pit, staging, prep area of the Trek Cyclocross team - guys like Lars Vanderhar, Quintin Hermans and Toon Aerts were hanging out, fussing with bikes and stuff - and while I filmed it, Schuster asked Sven questions he’d gathered from social media. Zach currently works with CXHairs and publishes the CXHairs Bulletin - I highly recommend subscribing to the bulletin. He is also on Cyclocross Radio with Bill Sheiken - a great podcast about all things cross! As a special treat: Name That Wisconsin Town, another idea to come from the mind of Zach. He and I wrote down the names of several Wisconsin towns - and took them around to some of the visiting European racers - We struck gold with our first participant - Loes Sels - a Belgian cyclist who was game for fun - she enjoyed it so much, that after we went through the list of towns, she dragged me over to then World Champion Sonna Cant, who had so much fun with it she hauled me over to Mathiew van der Poel - who willingly played along! We also found Eva Lechner from Italy, Caroline Mani and Steve and Lucie Chainel from France, and Ellen Van Loy from Belgium - and of course, we had to get the correct pronunciations from Wisconsin native and world cup podium winner Katie Keough! At the end we threw in the twist of making Katie say the name of one of the world cup stops in France! Thanks for listening to Bike Talk with Dave! I hope you had fun with this throwback episode! Arkansas High Country Race Director: Andrew Onermaa

Sparkling streams, hills and hollows, shady rivers, mountain views, waterfalls, swimming holes, historic sites, bustling cities – the Arkansas High Country Route has it all. According to local route designer Chuck Campbell, “That route don’t go no where — It just runs around everywhere!” Indeed, this route is designed to connect many of the interesting places in west-central and northwest Arkansas. We connected with Race Director Andrew Onermaa to talk about the AHCR and what it takes to complete the 1000-mile, 450-mile and 187-mile back country bike packing routes. We also talk about the scholarship program to help people defray the cost of registering for the race - thanks to a legacy gift left by a bike packing enthusiast named Daniel Collins. Thanks to Andrew for taking the time to talk with me and tell us all about the Arkansas High Country Race - be sure to follow them on instagram and facebook at arhighcountryrace and check out all the details online at arkansashighcountry.com - and if you want to apply for an entry fee scholarship send your request directly to Andrew at race@arkansashighcountry.com. Maeghan Easler: United Cycling - Road, Gravel, ESport Cyclist

Maeghan Easler found cycling, like many others, as rehab for a running injury. After some time as a successful triathlete, she decided to focus on the bike, but only for a short time, as she decided to continue with school in pursuit of further education in Oregon. The challenges of COVID led her back her home in Iowa where another running injury led her back to the bike, where she found herself pinning a number on as well as doing some Zwift racing. On Zwift she represented the U.S. at the ESport World Championships - which led her to a spot on the United Cycling Team. In the summer of 2022, she found much success on the road, as well as gravel, placing 3rd overall in the Green Mountain Stage Race and 6th overall at the Gravel World Championships. Single Speed USA: An inside look at the SS U.S. Championships(?)

Esplicito
Single Speed USA is more about mountain biking with friends, new and old, having fun and enjoying some local brews than it is about going fast on high tech 11-speed full suspension race bikes. Held in a different location each year, locations earned by competing in some crazy cooked up contest, this year it migrated to Deborah, Iowa, a small college town in north east Iowa surrounded by limestone bluffs, trout streams and challenging mountain bike trails. I brought my mic and camera (and a full suspension, fully geared bike… quite the opposite of everyone else there, except for at least one guy, whom you’ll meet) and started recording. My goal? Take you to Deborah to enjoy the atmosphere, trails and meet some of the crazy folks who came from as far as Arizona and New England to laugh, have some beers and push their single speeds to the top of Van Peenen Bluff. There is some cussing here and there, as you might expect. It is a fully Single Speed Crowd. Thanks to Jesse Reyerson (Spinner), who organized the event this year, for kindly welcoming me into the SSUSA Posse. To find out where and when the 2023 event is, follow Single Speed USA (SSUSA) on Instagram and Facebook. Thanks also to Eric from Embark Good Energy for the samples of his pure maple and sea salt energy packs. #crossishere Sunny Gilbert talks about life racing bikes in the mud

Like many of us, Sunny Gilbert found her way to cycling through running. A mid-distance runner at Mizzou, Gilbert stood atop a great number of podiums, including at the NCAA National Championships. After completing her undergrad work she continued her studies in Boulder, CO, where she discovered triathlon (and a number of other sports, like mountain biking and snowshoe racing). She eventually discovered the cyclocross bike and rose to the top of the U.S. cyclocross scene, where she's not only taken home a silver and bronze medal at the U.S. National Cyclocross Championships, but won the 2019 Single Speed CX World Championships! Sunny was kind enough to take some time out of her busy work and training schedule to talk with me in mid-August, as the 2022 Cyclocross Season starts to wind up! The Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race: A tandem perspective with Dee and Dave Mable

Starting at 10,600- feet, the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race is considered one of the highest and most challenging mountain bike races in the world. In 2004 Dee and Dave Mable pushed off at E. Sixth and Harrison for a 12-hour, 100-mile race over six long climbs on their tandem bicycle. That first year the pair earned their buckles by a scant four-and-a-half minutes. In their three attempts that followed they landed twice on the second step of the podium and once just inside the time limit. The following is a conversation between the two, recounting the highs and lows, the challenges and victories they discovered along the way as they rode their tandem in the Race Across the Sky! Ride With Dan! Daniel Hurd: Pedaling the Lower 48 States (And RAGBRAI!) One Pedal At A Time!

Daniel Hurd, or Lt. Dan, was in a dark place in 2017. Overweight, no money and no hope led him to try to end his life not once, but three times. Thankfully he was unsuccessful - and a persistent friend finally convinced him to ride a bike on which he learned to just take it “one pedal at a time.” In the five years since his last suicide attempt, he’s ridden in all of the Lower 48 states, started a non-profit to help those who see no hope, and has conducted 100 suicide interventions. I met him surfing through Iowa on RAGBRAI spreading smiles and I had to know his story. Lt. Dan has found a joy in life and works every day to put a smile on a strangers face. My hope is that our conversation puts a smile on your face, and the joy Dan found on a bike spreads and continues to spread! Find Lt. Dan at www.ridewithdanusa.com and his organization - One Pedal At A Time Movement for Suicide Prevention can be found at www.opaatmovement.com. Please connect, support and learn! The Bike Talk with Dave RAGBRAI SPECTACULAR!

In it’s 49 years rolling across Iowa, The Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, has become a rolling parade of 20,000-plus stories. It’s my role to uncover some of them and share them with the world, so in 2022, my family and I packed our bikes, sleeping bags, tent (sans fly) and my microphone and set off for Sargent Bluff to roll for the next week across Iowa. I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into some of the people that make this such a great and unique experience. Whenever I caught sight of something or someone interesting, I grabbed my mic from it’s pouch and started recording! I met way more people than if I had just rolled through in search of pie, and most everyone was excited to tell their stories. So sit back, relax and enjoy this little compilation of RAGBRAI 2022, as seen through the eyes - or rather heard through the ears of - Dave.
