Across Central Europe, medieval monastery logs, early modern witchcraft tribunals, and nineteenth-century parish records document identical nocturnal events: a heavy weight pressing on the chest, a sweet musty odor at dawn, and a pale figure glimpsed in the dark. Filed variously as demonic visitations, witchcraft, and later as mass hysteria, these accounts are traditionally dismissed as folklore or psychological sleep paralysis. This Field Note re-examines those archival records through a biological lens, proposing that the legends of the Alp, the Mara, the Drude, and the Walrider describe a single, physical organism: the Nachtalben.
