Ask Dr. Applewhite Why Parents with Disabilities Drop-Out?

Dr. Applewhite discusses the reasons why parents drop-out of college and the workforce. These are parents categorized as "non-traditional" adult learners/students that do not fit the stereotype held of the "traditional" college student. According to research, nearly two-thirds of "non-traditional" adult college students in the U.S. drop out prior to graduation! This is largely due to the lack of planning in all areas of life, sound advisement, and counseling intervention. Adult students with a learning or mental disability, who are parents, carry the additional responsibility of being a role model for their own children to finish school and learning to advocate for accommodations. Hear a unique insight on working parents with mental illness in light of Miriam Carey's shooting incident last year. Ask Dr. Applewhite About Non-Visible Disabilities at School and Work

You don’t look “disabled”! Many have thought this statement and/or said it. This is a major reason why many people with a mental/learning or non-visible disability are hesitant to communicate their needs for accommodations at school or on the job? Unfortunately, many adults in the workplace today experienced negative stereotypes in early school years about people who learn differently than others and never learned or were too fearful to communicate their need for help. Special Guest Robert Hickem from Salt River Council joins to discuss the importance of communication between agencies and the persons with disabilities they serve. Today’s Veteran with a mental disability, along with many other non-military personnel, need to learn how to communicate their needs when dealing with challenges such as PTSD. Hear Chip Stoecker, Veteran, and Manager of the Ability Center in Phoenix share suggestions on ways to improve our communication skills. Veterans join our VET2VET™ segment for news updates and commentary at the end of the show.
