ADHD &... Body Doubling: How to Borrow Someone Else's Focus
Body doubling sounds like something out of a psychology textbook, but if you've ever gotten more done because a friend sat nearby with her own laptop, you've already been doing it. In this episode, Jorie breaks down what body doubling really means for an ADHD brain: simply having another person present while you work, with no help or attention required from them, and why that presence alone can turn an overwhelming task into a manageable one. Needing this kind of support isn't a sign you can't work alone. It's a sign you understand your brain and know how to work with it, the same way glasses help someone see more clearly. In this episode: ➜ What body doubling is and why it works so well for an ADHD brain ➜ Practical ways to build it into your day, from virtual coworking to a busy coffee shop ➜ How to find your ideal body doubling match and set it up so it works for you, not against you ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletter: https://tinyurl.com/33z4a5j5 ─────────── RATE & REVIEW: If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder and ready to understand how their brain works. When Achievement Hides ADHD | April Garcia
Esplicito
I laughed so much during this interview and I know you will too. While training to become an occupational therapist, April Garcia did an entire school project on ADHD, building a strategy for kids who couldn't get ready for school on time no matter how hard they tried. Nine years later, she found out she had ADHD herself, and almost nobody around her was surprised...except for April herself. April is the author of The Room to Be Brave, a memoir that uses the metaphor of rooms in a house to walk through the parts of her past that shaped her. In this conversation, we talk about what happens when achievement becomes the way you hide the mess underneath, why doctors so often dismiss ADHD in women who look like they have it together on paper, and how she got sober and got diagnosed within ten days of each other. We also get into emotional dysregulation, the apology she owed her kids, and how humor has carried her family through some genuinely hard years, including her mother's decades-long illness. If nobody, including you, saw your ADHD coming, this episode will help you make sense of it. ─────────── CONNECT WITH APRIL: Website: aprildaygarcia.com Instagram & Facebook: @AprilDayGarcia Book: The Room to Be Brave, available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold ─────────── RESOURCES MENTIONED: Laurel Denise Planners: https://www.laureldenise.com - use my code JHLD10 for 10% off your purchase! ─────────── 📩 Get weekly ADHD insights delivered to your inbox: Jorie's Substack and Newsletters: https://tinyurl.com/33z4a5j5 ─────────── RATE & REVIEW: If this episode resonated, please follow the show & leave a review here: https://ratethispodcast.com/adhdand ABOUT THE PODCAST ADHD &... with Jorie Houlihan is a podcast for women with ADHD who are tired of trying harder - and ready to understand how their brain works. ADHD and Organizing: Finding What Works | Mindy Leonard
Have you tried every organizing system out there, only to watch it fall apart within a few weeks? If so, this episode is for you. Jorie sits down with Mindy Leonard, founder of Super Organized Spaces (SOS), to talk about what real organizing support looks like for a brain that works differently. Mindy has spent years helping clients declutter, purge, and build systems that hold up in real life. She and Jorie talk through the myths that keep people stuck, why perfectionism has no place in a system that works, and where to start when a space feels like too much, so you can finally feel steady in your own home. ADHD &... Working Memory: Build Your Second Brain (Externalize Your Thoughts)
Is your ADHD brain dropping thoughts the second they form? You're not broken - your working memory just needs backup. In this episode, we're diving into externalizing your thoughts: the simple (but life-changing) practice of getting everything OUT of your head and into a system you can actually trust. What you'll learn: ➜ What "externalizing thoughts" actually means - and why it's a non-negotiable for the ADHD brain ➜ Why starting with ONE tool matters more than finding the perfect app ➜ The novelty problem: how to keep visual reminders from becoming invisible wallpaper ➜ The "disrupt your flow" anchoring trick (put things where they literally can't be ignored) ➜ Why handwriting beats typing for ADHD memory - and how to use your phone assistant as a safety net ➜ How to quiet the perfectionism that sabotages every system you try to build ───────── RESOURCES MENTIONED: Sticky notes + wall calendars (low-tech wins) Voice memos & phone assistant reminders Whiteboards - with the color-swap trick Your ADHD Action Blueprint: https://tinyurl.com/4vu9zamj ───────── 🔗 Ready to work on this with someone who gets it? ADHD, Dyslexia & the Brain You Were Born With | Bryan Mark Rigg, PhD
Esplicito
What if the brain you've spent your life fighting was never broken to begin with? In this episode, Jorie sits down with historian, researcher, and Yale graduate Bryan Mark Rigg, PhD - someone who has spent 25 years studying ADHD and dyslexia, not just in the lab, but in his own life, in his children's lives, and across thousands of years of human history. What he shares reframes the conversation entirely. This is not a "you're special" pep talk.
