In the past, Sam, AJ, and Karen discuss more plans for Giovanni's Room. Company Towns and artificial intelligence have come to the USA, and there are fewer and fewer options for people to meet their basic needs. In the future, a GR community prepares to say goodbye to one of its members. The land that was once called the USA is owned by three giant corporations, and the survivors have to battle toxic air, acid rain, and unyielding earth as they work to build anew from the ashes of a collapsed empire.
In the past, Karen, AJ, and Sam go to a pizza place and talk more about their ideas for surviving the end of a world. AJ defends themself against a man's assault, and it is revealed that, in the America that the three are living in, it is illegal to even talk about resistance or revolution. In the future, we learn that there is something a little different about AJ, and that large agricultural companies have so polluted the plants, seeds, and soil that the USA is a wasteland where almost no food will grow.
In episode 2 of A Next Day, we learn more about AJ's ideas for surviving the end of the world, and the origins of Giovanni's Room. In the future, AJ survives an explosion, and we learn about the precautions that are necessary in the post-apocalyptic world--decontamination, special suits, and quarantine.
In Part 1 of A Next Day, we witness the meeting of AJ, Karen, and Sam at a bar in southern California. We learn the awful fate of the US empire, and flash forward to a dystopian future where violence, pollution, racism, and misogyny have turned the United States of America into a disease-ridden wasteland. This unlikely trio begins a conversation at the bar that will be the beginning of their survival and the remaking of themselves, their community, and humanity as a whole.
