2 White Girls Talk Bollywood
Stagione 1
di Kim Hughes & Katie Babione
In this week's episode, we're not just talking Bollywood-- we're talking Bollywood and Kollywood! We're recapping the Tamil-language film Thadam, and it's Hindi-language remake, Gumraah. Both movies follow the twists and turns of a murder investigation where the two lead suspects have... a lot in common. Whichever one you choose to watch, you'll be left wondering if anyone is truly guilty or innocent. Thadam was written and directed by Magizh Thirumeni and stars Arun Vijay and Vidya Pradeep. Gumraah was directed by Vardhan Ketkar and stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Mrunal Thakur, and Ronit Roy. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Happy 4th of July! We're celebrating American Independence Day with a discussion of everything that's wrong with our country, as depicted in the Bollywood film My Name Is Khan. The movie tells the story of a Muslim man and his family trying to navigate life in post-9/11 America. It shines a light on the intolerance, violence, and hateful stereotyping that still characterizes life in the states for many, even decades later. My Name Is Khan stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and was directed by Karan Johar. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Wanna hear more? It's our last episode of Pride Month, and we're going out on a high note! This week's film tells the story of a gay couple... and by that we mean, a gay man and a lesbian, pretending to be a hetero couple to appease their families. Can their ruse survive meddling relatives, nosy neighbors, and actual love interests? Will these two have to keep hiding who they are, just to live a "normal" life? Badhaai Do stars Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, and Chum Darang. It was directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. This week's movie is about how love can overcome any obstacle, even the obstacle of two people probably just not being right for one another. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui tells the story of Manu, a cishet bodybuilder who falls, first passionately and then reluctantly, in love with a transgender woman. Despite having some problematic--and at times down right harmful--messaging, this film certainly gives us a lot to unpack. It stars Vaani Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana, and was directed by Abhishek Kapoor. It was written by Supratik Sen and Tushar Paranjape, based on a story by Simran Sahni. Like what you're hearing? We're continuing our month of LGBTQIA+ movies with our first ever Kannada language film, Naanu Ladies! This poignant drama follows two women, Anita and Padma, as they grapple with their identities as queer people, women, and artists. Can their love for one another transcend familial rejection, financial strife, and infidelity? Regardless, this movie leaves us with a lot to dissect, and it was fantastic to be swept away by a story told by a queer woman, for the queer community! Naanu Ladies was written and directed by Shailaja Padindala, who also stars in the film alongside Medini Kelamane. Like what you're hearing? Happy Pride everyone! This month we're featuring films that all center LGBTQIA+ storylines. First up is Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, a movie made to remind us that love is love, and that the battles we fight against our families are often the hardest. Oh, and that chasing trains is a staple of any true romance! There's a lot here to enjoy, but a lot to critique too. And we don't shy away from doing either. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar. It was written and directed by Hitesh Kewalya. Like what you're hearing? This week's movie is a rom com about family... or maybe, a family comedy about finding love? Either way, there's a lot of fun to be had! Can hopeless romantic/hobby break-up artist Mickey and Tinni, the witty and independent love of his life overcome their differences? Can love withstand the pressure from your future in-laws to change your gynecologist? Are we finally free from our streak of not-so-awesome new release movies? Tune in to find out! Tu Jhoothi Main Main Makkaar stars Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, and Dimple Kapadia. Luv Ranjan wrote and directed. Like what you're hearing? Listen friends-- not every movie we watch is going to be a winner. Even when it stars one of our favorite Bollywood boys, and has some fantastic supporting talent, some films are less than the sum of their parts! That was the case here with Cirkus, but we still had a fantastic time chatting about why this movie fell flat. And a cameo from Deepika Padukone makes just about anything worth it. Cirkus stars Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, Johnny Lever, and Sanjay Mishra. It was directed by Rohit Shetty. Like what you're hearing? This week's film is all about nature vs nurture, father vs son, drug smugglers vs avocado toast-loving millennials. See who comes out on top in Shehzada, the Bollywood remake of the Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Shehzada stars Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon, and Paresh Rawal. It was directed by Rohit Dhawan. Gangsters? Check. Exceptional dance numbers? Check. A flippy boy who is inexplicably good at fighting? Check! This week's flick has everything required for a dance-action dramedy. Oh, and we didn't even mention all the moonwalking! Munna Michael stars Tiger Shroff (I mean, who else?), Nidhhi Agerwal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It also features Ronit Roy and Pankaj Tripathi, and was directed by Sabir Khan. Like what you're hearing? Remember to follow us on Instagram @2whitegirlstalkbollywood. Wanna hear more?
