In the final installment of our "Births of the Gods" series, we examine a narrative that turns the Hindu hierarchy on its head. In the Shaiva Puranas, Brahma—the purported Creator—is demoted to a mere "dextral derivative." According to the Shiva Purana and Linga Purana, after producing Vishnu from his left side, Shiva secreted a "nectar" from his right side, from which Brahma manifested as a subordinate assistant.
