Recovery Is Possible: Understanding Substance Use, Addiction & Hope
🎙️ Recovery Is Possible: Understanding Substance Use, Addiction & Hope September is National Recovery Month, and this week Our Wellness Room is opening the door to an honest, compassionate conversation about substance use disorder, addiction, and recovery. What’s the difference between substance use, misuse, dependence, and substance use disorder? When does substance use become a clinical concern? And why is addiction so much more complicated than simply telling someone to “just stop”? Christa and Andrew explore what substance use disorder can really look like—beyond the stereotypes. We talk about the role of stigma and shame, the impact addiction can have on individuals and the people who love them, and the difficult balance between offering compassion and maintaining healthy boundaries. We also talk about something that can sometimes get lost in conversations about addiction: hope. Recovery doesn’t look the same for everyone. It may involve treatment, therapy, peer support, medication, community, rebuilding relationships, learning new ways to cope, and sometimes beginning again after setbacks. Recovery is not simply about stopping the use of a substance—it can be about rebuilding a life. Whether you are in recovery, considering making a change, supporting someone you love, working in the helping professions, or simply wanting to better understand substance use disorder, there is room for you in this conversation. 💚 Different stories. Same hope. People can and do recover. Pull up a chair. Our Wellness Room is open. Our Wellness Room with Christa & Andrew Real people. Real conversations. Real hope.
Suicide Prevention & Awareness:
Suicide Prevention & Awareness: Real People. Real Struggles. Real Hope. Suicide is one of the hardest conversations we can have—and perhaps one of the most important. In this episode of Our Wellness Room, Christa and Andrew open the door to an honest, compassionate conversation about suicide prevention and awareness. We talk about what suicidal thoughts can look like, why someone may appear “fine” while quietly struggling, warning signs we shouldn’t ignore, and how to approach someone when we’re concerned. We also explore a question many people are afraid to ask: “Are you thinking about suicide?” What happens if the answer is yes? What should we say? What should we avoid? And how can we support someone not only during a crisis, but in the days and weeks that follow? Most importantly, this episode is about replacing shame with compassion and reminding one another that struggling does not make someone weak, broken, or beyond hope. Mental health struggles can touch anyone—including the people who spend their lives helping others. You don’t need perfect words to help someone. Sometimes you simply need the courage to ask, the willingness to listen, and the compassion to stay. Real People. Real Struggles. Real Hope. Content note: This episode contains discussion of suicide, suicidal thoughts, and mental health crisis. Please listen with care. If you or someone you know is struggling or experiencing a mental health crisis in the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, call 911 (tel:911) or go to the nearest emergency department. ❤️ You matter. Your story matters. And asking for help is always allowed.
Teen Relationships, Sex, Peer Pressure, and Substances
🎙️ Back-to-School Series, Part 2: Helping Teens Navigate the Real World Being a teenager has never been simple—but today’s teens are navigating relationships, peer pressure, mental health challenges, substances and vaping, technology, and expectations that can sometimes feel overwhelming. In Part 2 of Our Wellness Room’s Back-to-School Series, Christa and Andrew continue the conversation about what teens are facing and, more importantly, how the adults in their lives can support them. We explore peer influence and identity, teen dating and healthy relationships, red flags and love bombing, boundaries and consent, substance use and vaping, stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being. We also talk about those moments when a teenager says “I’m fine”—when their behavior may be telling us something very different. Throughout the episode, we focus on one recurring message: connection before correction. Supporting teens doesn’t mean having all the answers or eliminating every struggle. It means creating relationships where young people feel safe enough to talk, ask for help, make mistakes, set boundaries, and know that the adults who care about them will continue showing up. Whether you’re a parent, educator, mental health professional, caregiver—or simply someone who cares about the next generation—we hope this conversation gives you practical tools, a different perspective, and a reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer a teenager is a safe place to land. 💙 Different perspectives. Stronger conversations. Healthier teens. Brighter tomorrows. 🎙️ Our Wellness Room — Real talk. Real tools. Real support.
Growing Up In a World That Never Logs Off: Social Media, Phones, and Self Image
🎙️ Back-to-School Series, Part 1: Growing Up in a World That Never Logs Off Being a teenager has never been simple—but today’s teens are growing up in a world that follows them everywhere. In Part 1 of our Back-to-School Series, Christa and Andrew step inside the digital world of today’s adolescents to talk about social media, cyberbullying, cell phones, online safety, body image, and the complicated balance between privacy and protection. How much should parents monitor? Why do likes, comments, filters, and followers matter so much? What happens when bullying follows a child home through a screen? And how do we talk about sexting, digital permanence, and online risks without creating fear, shame, or secrecy? Most importantly, we explore how parents, educators, caregivers, and wellness professionals can create something teens desperately need: a safe relationship with an adult they can turn to when something goes wrong. Because protecting teens in a digital world isn’t just about controlling their devices. It’s about helping them develop the confidence, judgment, and skills to make healthy choices when we’re not there to make those choices for them. 🎧 Join us inside Our Wellness Room for real conversations, practical tools, and stronger connections. Growing up has changed. Our conversations with teens need to change with it. 💙🎒📱
