Dyslexia in the ESL Classroom: Empowering your students.

In this episode, I am talking about mental health and dyslexia. Dyslexic students struggle daily and receive many negative comments. Adults want the kids to be resilient, but it's hard to feel empowered when you fail daily. ✔️All students need to be taught using evidence-based methods, but they also need a supportive adult to help them find their inner "Why"? ✔️Dyslexic ESL students are smart and resourceful; they think outside the box yet suffer from anxiety and depression. ✔️Help them find their "Why" and transform their lives. ❕ I will be running a free three-day challenge in my Facebook group 📣https://lnkd.in/g8Uwes3C on January 2023, 12,13 &14th at 7 pm CET. ✔️If you can't make it, don't worry. ✔️There will be lots of free content, worksheets & tasks. The recordings will be available for a week. #dyslexia #getunstuckwithyourenglish #aniadyslexia #dysleksja #teachersoflinkedin #angielskionline #fbchallenge references: Dyslexia-friendly classrooms; dyslexia-inclusive schools. Bilingualism & Dyslexia

There are many misconceptions surrounding dyslexia. Bilingual dyslexics can be successful and bi-literate. Bilingualism is the ability to speak two languages. It may be acquired early by children in regions where most adults speak two languages or when a child is raised with parents or parents who use their L1 at home. ✅Research findings prove that people with dyslexia who are bilingual outperform their monolingual peers. However, they experience difficulties in their schooling. ✅Bilingual dyslexic students can experience different severities depending on the language systems. A child whose first language is Italian will have mild deficits with their L1, whereas they will struggle with English or French because those languages are more phonetically complex. If you are a parent or an educator, please bear it in mind: Dyslexic Bilingual students should be taught to read and write in their L1 because this will give them strong foundations in L2, and yes, they can be successful and bi-literate ! ✔️ There are many misconceptions in the ELT world, and dyslexic ESL students are often accommodated instead of receiving the intervention. ✔️ Join my course waitlist, and you will receive a 10 % off; plus, you will receive my E-book Dyslexia in the ESL classroom and my recorded webinars & more !📢 https://lnkd.in/gDtZcfQE #dyslexia #esl #teachersoflinkedin #getunstuckwithyourenglish #angielskionline #dysleksja #literacy #education #evidencebasedpractice

My Dyslexia Pet Peeves

Dyslexia is a condition in which a learner or child has a neurological disorder resulting in difficulties listening, reading, or communicating content properly. Dyslexia affects everyone differently. ✅It causes reading, spelling, and writing difficulties but can also affect memory and organizational skills, which are necessary for learning a language. ✅Proficient reading affects a learner's entire education. While some educators feel well-prepared to perform such an important task, some wish there were better equipped and supported to affect a child's life, particularly those with Dyslexia. ✅ELT education is full of myths and ideas that have never been tested. In today`s episode, I have collected my pet peeves! ✅Teachers can help their students turn their lives around with the right tools.🔊If you fill out my Survey: Dyslexia in the ESL Classroom, you will receive my free e-book:" Multisensory Grammar" and be the first to know about my 3-Day Facebook Challenge: "Dyslexia in the ESL Classroom.""https://lnkd.in/g52QekqV

Q & A. You ask & I answer.

❇️ Someone once said that to ask the right question is harder than to answer it, and I cannot agree more! ❇️ This episode was crowdfunded. I must say I enjoyed answering your questions. ❇️ ELT is full of fluff and unicorns; myths and misconceptions are peeking from every corner, so let me dismantle one of them before you tune in: You are not a visual learner. Learning styles are a myth deeply rooted in constructivism. ❎ "The most dispiriting thing about learning styles, as this article points out, is that as late as 2014, more than 90% of teachers believed it.". Black & White thinking. The winner doesn`t take it all !

✳️ Black and white thinking are also known as polarized thinking. ✳️When thinking in absolutes, we tend to underestimate our abilities; instead of work in progress, we see a trail of disasters. ✳️Neurodivergent students often compare someone`s chapter twenty to their chapter three. The all-or-nothing approach does not serve them and is often connected to higher anxiety levels and underperformance. ✳️if you want to break through your B2 & leave the fallacy of polarized thinking, join my Break Through B2 course. ✳️There is one spot left! 🔊 book a free discovery call with me 🔊https://calendly.com/polca-languages/30min

Myths in Education

🔷"Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fancies." - Hypatia. ❎ ELT education is full of myths and misconceptions. They enter the education field easily but are difficult to uproot. In this short article, I will discuss the most popular ones. ❎ We should practice discernment and critical thinking regarding myths that cross Education; we should not mistake common practice for best practice.. ❕ If you want to get unstuck with Your English, my bespoke course Break Through B2 is open as of now. 🔊 Book a free discovery call to find out if we are a good match -https://calendly.com/polca-languages/30min References: Condon, Kristy. Into the Journey of Words: Structured Word Inquiry

The English language has many layers, like a cake: ✔️Etymology ✔️Morphology ✔️Phonology ❕ When we try to examine it we see many words with different spellings, like these: ✳️ Anglo-Saxon (Old English)Short, one-syllable words, sometimes com .sky, earth, moon, sun, water, sheep, dog. ✳️ Norman French ou for /ū/ Soft c and g when followed by .amuse, cousin, cuisine, country, peace, . ✳️ Latin/Romance Multisyllabic words with prefixes, roots .firmament, terrestrial, solar, stellar, ✳️ .Greek Spellings ph for /f/, ch for /k/, and y ...hypnosis, agnostic, neuropsychology, 📢 Structured word inquiry digs deep into the language: it examines how word parts, structure, origin, and history over time tell the story of what words mean, how they're connected, and how they're written. ❕ A simple example is the root *bher- to bear, and now we have a burden; in OE it was byrðen :-). ❕ Language makes sense; when we treat it like science, we are empowered and make connections, and all of a sudden, we break through that plateau that was holding us back❕ 🔊Join my Free Masterclass on September 5th and learn how to break through B2 and be a confident user of English ➡️ https://polcalanguages.kartra.com/page/eHN32 references: Bowers, P.
