How I Met Your Mother S01E01 — Pilot

Ted watches Marshall prepare to propose to Lily and spirals over being single, just as Barney pushes him into meeting Robin at MacLaren's. Their connection is real, but Ted's midnight blue French horn gesture turns from romantic swing to overreach when he says too much too soon.

The pilot establishes the show's central tension between messy real-life love and Ted's need to turn every moment into destiny. It also sets the friend group dynamic: Marshall and Lily as the grounded couple, Barney as chaos in a suit, and Robin as the person who challenges Ted's fantasy before it can harden into certainty.
