por Dr Lindsay Nealon
Temporada 1
Desk Life with Dr Friede Kiernan
Dr. Lindsay sits down with returning guest Dr. Friede Kiernan from the Healthy Families clinic about why desk work often causes discomfort, even when it feels “comfortable.” She emphasizes that the real issue is sustained, static positions and lack of movement, rather than perfect posture. Dr. Friede describes common complaints among desk workers (maybe you recognize your own pain pattern?) and explains how forward head and rounded-shoulder posture can strain joints and muscles, reduce motion, and contribute to dysfunctional breathing patterns. She gives some recommendations to combat these issues, and discusses how chiropractic care can help joint motion and nervous system input to support desk work. Book an appointment with Dr. Friede at the Healthy Families clinic, and DM her on Instagram @dr.friedekiernan
Chiropractic and Your Brain
Your nervous system is the body’s control centre: your brain relies on constant sensory input from spinal joints to build an accurate “body map” that governs proprioception (where am I), motor control (how do I move), and threat assessment (am I safe). When spinal joints are restricted, the resulting distorted input floods your system with TV static - leading to compensation, poor posture, tension and a shift toward protective stress responses. Adjustments provide specific input that research suggests alters activity in the prefrontal cortex, motor cortex and cerebellum, improving sensory-motor integration, regulation and benefits that go way beyond pain relief…like better sleep, calmer reactions, clearer thinking and more energy. Dr. Amy Graf, Your Kiddos’ Chiro - Better Breastfeeding
Get ready for a mic swap - returning guest Dr. Amy Graf takes up the mantle of hosting duties for this episode from Dr. Lindsay! Dr. Amy is a pediatric and family chiropractor at Healthy Families Chiropractic in Calgary, and in this special solo she explains how gentle, nervous system focussed chiropractic care can support babies and families…especially with difficulties in breastfeeding. She describes common feeding-related signs of tension, and discusses how neck and body tension developed in the birth process can affect nursing coordination. Get ready to nerd out about all the complex jobs your baby’s cranial nerves are in charge of when they’re feeding, and why gentle chiropractic support can help them eat, sleep, and live better - because any parent knows that if their baby can do all those things well, it makes their life better, too. Finding Sovereign Success with Emily Bishop
Dr Lindsay sits down with Emily Bishop, biomedical-engineering-researcher-turned-embodiment-guide and founder of Sovereign Success. They speak about helping ambitious, high-achieving mothers reconnect with their inner knowing, and redefining success so ambition and motherhood can coexist in harmony. Emily shares her own post - a mat leave experience of feeling unfulfilled despite “having it all,” noticing stress, anxiety, impatience, and lack of presence creeping in, and using her second maternity leave to rediscover who she was beyond career and motherhood. They discuss the matrescence identity transition, the need for a holistic view of success across career, family, and wellbeing, and how human design offers a practical framework based on birth data to explore one’s natural gifts beyond conditioning. Emily also explains her eight-week, one-on-one cohort program Sovereign Success. Mattress Basics…and Why “Perfect” Isn’t the Point
From the house, to the cabin, to the occasional “drunkie-bunkie,” this episode is all about sleep, mattresses, pillows and why the “perfect” setup is not actually the goal. Dr. Lindsay shares practical guidance on what matters most in a mattress, how motion isolation can help couples sleep better, why movement during sleep is healthy and how to think differently about pillows. The real takeaway? Health is adaptability. We want a body that can handle variety and still rest, recover, and wake up feeling good. The Power of Walking with Dr. Friede
Dr. Friede Kiernan of Healthy Families Chiropractic discusses walking as a powerful, often overlooked tool for health. Walking requires complex, full-body coordination of balance, posture, muscles, and joints. She explains that regular walking supports mental wellbeing by improving memory, focus, mood, emotional balance, and stress regulation through steady rhythmic input that helps the nervous system feel calm and safe, which can even help sleep and digestion. Dr. Friede also explains that walking is accessible, low impact, and suitable for most fitness levels; research suggests that just 30 minutes of brisk walking four to five times per week can unlock extraordinary benefits…but starting slowly and focusing on consistency is the best way to build your walking routine. Outdoor walking further enhances nervous system regulation through natural light, fresh air, and reduced stress hormones, which is why it’s a key component of Dr. Friede’s biweekly weekend Walk & Wellness group. The Journey of Growing a Community-First Food Business in Calgary
Dr. Lindsay sits down with returning guest Amy Kadziolka, founder of Better Day Food Co., a thoughtful meal delivery company based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Amy shares how the business first sprouted as an idea during her and her husband’s around-the-world honeymoon, and then became both of their main work stream thanks to COVID. They discuss shifting from a fully plant-based menu to adding meat to meet their customer’s needs - and the needs of their own growing family, too - while keeping the same values of quality and connection. Amy explains their community-first approach through partnerships, markets, events, and giveaways, and highlights giving-back efforts including with Leftovers Calgary, Love for Lewiston, and I Can for Kids. Amy also reflects on balancing entrepreneurship with raising her two young children - including the crucial advice she’s learned about sharing her dreams, and when & how to ask for support. Creating Your Family’s Healthcare Team
Dr Lindsay gives practical tips on how to build a family healthcare team - a daunting task, but one that you can break down into smaller bites by separating it into an emergency & illness care team, and a proactive health creation team. She invites listeners to reflect upon and clarify for themselves their beliefs about health, because beliefs shape care choices. Dr Lindsay shares her own health statement (which you can take or leave as you need, since your health needs and goals might be different!) and outlines the four-dimension framework she recommends for building your health creation team: physical, emotional, spiritual, and nutritional. Your healthcare team should evolve over time, and align with your family’s values - and if you want to practice interviewing a new practitioner for your team, you can always call the Healthy Families Chiropractic clinic! Questions to ask yourself: What do you actually believe about health? What do you believe health to be? Do you believe your body is capable of healing? Do you believe there’s a difference between protection and growth? Do you see symptoms as problems to silence… or as messages from your body that something needs attention? What do you believe our current healthcare system is best at? And where is it limited? What do you want your kids to grow up believing about their bodies? If you keep doing health the way you’re doing it now, will the next generation be healthier or sicker? The Hidden Link Between Pelvic Floor, Hips, and Low Back Pain with Hilary McDermott
Dr. Lindsay sits down with pelvic floor physiotherapist Hilary McDermott to chat about the connection between pelvic floor function and persistent hip and low back pain. They discuss common indicators such as deep hard-to-locate hip pain, tailbone pain, and chronic pain that doesn’t fully resolve with stretching, massage, or medication. Hilary also delves into the differences between underactive versus overactive pelvic floors (or, as is often the case, how a combination can also present); asymmetries stemming from daily habits; and the whole-system approach used in pelvic floor physio, including breathing, mobility, core and glute/hip strengthening, and internal exam when appropriate. They flag that pelvic floor dysfunction can overlap with urinary leakage and can mimic bladder infection symptoms, period pain, or ovulation pain through referred pain. Dr Lindsay and Hilary also highlight the importance of collaboration between pelvic floor physio and chiropractic care for joint mobility, muscle function, and longer-lasting results.
