A judge has dismissed President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against The Des Moines Register and pollster J. Ann Selzer. Iowa District Judge Scott J. Beattie rejected Trump’s claim that the newspaper’s polling coverage of the 2024 presidential race violated Iowa’s consumer fraud law. The judge called the case extraordinary and said the argument could have a chilling effect that could discourage others from reporting on and debating public affairs. …

In other Iowa news, two people who died following a water incident during a school field trip at Coralville Reservoir have been identified. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as 24-year-old Hannah Jorgensen of Tiffin and 10-year-old Ahmed Osman of Iowa City. …

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is assisting with an investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Cedar Rapids. Police say the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon. One person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. No police officers were injured. …

Around the country, a federal judge has temporarily blocked the White House from banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House grounds. The judge ordered that access be restored while the legal fight continues. …

And overseas, Russian drone and missile strikes in Ukraine killed at least eight civilians, according to officials. A strike in the northeastern Kharkiv region killed six agricultural workers and wounded 12 others. …

Let’s talk about something that hits a little closer to home — your wallet. The price of regular unleaded gasoline in Iowa jumped 23 cents this week to an average of $4.34 per gallon, according to AAA. That is $1.42 higher than a year ago. Diesel is averaging $6.28 per gallon in Iowa, up 16 cents this week and $2.77 higher than a year ago. If you are looking for the cheapest gas in the metro, the Daily Umbrella lists $4.12 at Maverik in Des Moines and Murphy USA in Altoona. Sam’s Club in Ankeny is listed at $4.14. …

The Sherman Hill Historic Home Tour returns Sept. 26 and 27 for its 50th celebration. And the Des Moines Playhouse continues its production of “Come from Away” through Oct. 4. …

Today in history: In 1789, the first U.S. Supreme Court was established when Congress passed the Judiciary Act of 1789 and President George Washington signed it. On this date in 1968, the first episode of “60 Minutes” aired on CBS. The program would become the longest-running primetime show in American television history. And in 2016, the National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. …
