West Des Moines is planning to replace its oldest fire and EMS station at Ashworth Road and Valley West Drive, just southeast of Valley High School. The station has served the community for nearly 55 years. Built in 1972 as a combined fire and police station, the facility has aged significantly, and city leaders are now pursuing a modern replacement. …
More than 80 students have come forward in connection with an Oskaloosa homecoming investigation that resulted in the cancellation of a high school football game. According to the Oskaloosa Community School District, the students identified by law enforcement self-reported their involvement. School officials say the students will be allowed to have their homecoming dance at a later date. …
A rainy start to September is also creating challenges for some Iowa fall attractions. At Wilson’s Orchard and Farm near Cumming, muddy conditions have complicated operations during one of the busiest times of the year, with plenty of apples still waiting to be picked. …
Around the nation, CNN, MS NOW and Politico have sued the Trump administration over being denied access to the White House grounds. The news organizations allege the selective ban violates the First Amendment, while the administration says White House access is a privilege. …
Closer to home, an Ottumwa man initially charged with attempted murder is now facing a first-degree murder charge after the shooting victim died. Police say the two 19-year-old men had agreed to meet and fight after arguing over a phone. …
Today’s Wonder Bargain of the Week comes from Jim Duncan. Portofino’s on Ankeny Boulevard is an independently owned restaurant in a space previously occupied by Taste of Texas BBQ and India Chef. Owner Simon Mekaj comes from a restaurant family, and Jim says the recipes are exceptional. His favorite was the veal piccata, which came with homemade dinner rolls and a choice of soup or salad for less than $20. Lunches are less than $13. …
