We're Back! - Fraser Aebly - October 10, 2024

On the return episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and Woodbine track announcer Robert Geller look back at five excellent stakes races from last Saturday and Sunday from Woodbine (1:01). There was a little bit of everything including a brother and sister from the same barn taking back-to-back stakes, Patches O'Houlihan overcoming some adversity to remain undefeated this season and a controversial Cup and Saucer Stakes that saw the finish order reversed. Jamie will tell you how you can enter a new weekly giveaway thanks to the HBPA of Ontario (27:30), jockey Fraser Aebly joins the show (28:10) to tell us all about how successful stints in three different provinces led him to finding a permanent home in a fourth. And we take a look ahead to the upcoming week of racing (50:12) at both Woodbine and Fort Erie, including four stakes races and some early Halloween celebrations at the border oval this coming Monday.

King's Plate Preview Special - August 14, 2024

In this special King's Plate Preview episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and the voice of Woodbine, track announcer Robert Geller take an in depth look at the field of 13 Canadian bred 3-year-olds that will line up in the starting gate on Saturday August 17th to contest the 165th running of the King's Plate at Woodbine Racetrack. They'll provide analysis of each runner in the race as well as give you their top choices, you'll also hear quotes and insights from some of the race's jockeys and trainers to help you make your picks for the first jewel of Canadian horse racing's Triple Crown.

It's in His Blood - Pietro Moran - August 8, 2024

On this week's episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and the voice of Woodbine, track announcer Robert Geller recap the week that was Thoroughbred horse racing in the province, including stakes action from Woodbine on August 3rd and 4th. Christophe Clement ship in Loon Cry took the Sweet Briar Too Stakes (14:25) under leading jockey Sahin Civaci, the second legs of the 2024 Ontario Sired Heritage Series would see the Kevin Attard trained Live Lucky remain undefeated, winning his third in a row to capture the Lake Superior Stakes (18:42), and Mark Casse's Olivia Rose would turn the tables on a game and determined Little Teddy to win the Thunder Bay Stakes (21:24). Jamie is joined by apprentice jockey Pietro Moran (39:35) who shares the story of his early life in Ireland before arriving in Canada and how the support of his large and tight knit family has helped him find so much success in just in first full season as a jockey. We then take a look ahead to the week of racing to come (1:11:17), highlighted by Woodbine oaks winner Kin's Concerto hoping to capture the second leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara in the Bison City Stakes and 2023 Canadian Stakes Champion Moira looking to defend her crown in this year's edition on August 10th.

On this week's episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and the voice of Woodbine Robert Geller take you through the week that was Thoroughbred horse racing in Ontario (1:26), recapping stakes action on July 27th including a shining performance in the Grade 3. Selene Stakes by Time to Dazzle (20:37), another walk in the park for reigning Champion 3-year-old male Paramount Prince in the Grade 2. Seagram Cup (25:20), and an authoritative return to action for last year's Champion Sprinter Patches O'Houlihan in the Pink Lloyd Stakes (42:13) on July 28th. On our biggest episode to date of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and Woodbine track announcer Robert Geller recap a big week in Ontario Thoroughbred racing (1:11), including a dominant performance in the Victoria Stakes on Friday by budding juvenile Mensa. Saturday's card at Woodbine was full of stakes action, headlined by the Plate Trial (23:30) and Woodbine Oaks (36:06), the final two preps for the August 17th King's Plate. Fort Erie saw a new face win the first race of her Thoroughbred training career (57:01), Woodbine handicapping journal author and Fort Erie track announcer Doug McPherson joins the show to share the story of his accomplished career thus far (1:01:49) and Jamie gives you a look ahead to the upcoming week of racing in the province (1:44:40).

Serendipity - Ericka Rusnak - July 18, 2024

On this episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, host Jamie Attard and the voice of Woodbine, track announcer Robert Geller look back at the past seven days of Thoroughbred racing in the province (1:30). Despite the cancellation of Sunday's card at Woodbine due to extreme heat in the GTA, there was no shortage of big winners and great stories to come out of the week, including the My Dear and Ballade Stakes from July 13th. With a couple unfortunate injuries forcing a pair of popular jockeys to miss some time, new leaders emerge atop the jockeys standings in Fort Erie (30:17). We're joined by breeder and Hill N Dale farm manager Ericka Rusnak (38:51), who shares her story of how purchasing a Thoroughbred mare over 20 years ago to make her a riding horse led to a career in breeding racehorses as well as the culmination of her years breeding quality over quantity. We take a look at an important week ahead (1:13:41), including the rescheduled Victoria Stakes on Friday, Woodbine Oaks and Plate Trial, in addition to the Grade 2 Connaught Cup and Grade 3 Trillium Stakes on Saturday July 20th.

On this week's episode of Beyond the Break presented by the HBPA of Ontario, Robert Geller helps recap the last seven days of racing in the province (1:05), including a couple apprentice jockeys quick to rebound from incidents they encountered recently. We discuss the Alywow Stakes from last Saturday's card, Robert gives his opinion on a few of the five stakes coming up this weekend on Woodbine's Super Saturday, including the Grade 3 Selene and Grade 3 Marine stakes which could each produce contenders for the Woodbine Oaks and King's Plate. Mike Langlois, co-owner of Paramount Prince, last year's Champion 3-year-old male in Canada joins us to share his incredible journey from first time owner to King's Plate winner (41:57).
