Attention: Student Shootings On & Off Campus (Rerun)

Listen to this rebroadcast to understand what Adult Learners, Teachers and Student Veterans are saying about overcoming the negative attention being paid to persons with mental illness. Unfortunately, when a shooter is arrested for possession or use of a firearm/gun on school premises more emphasis is placed on his diagnoses of Mental Disorders. Join Host, Dr. Danita Applewhite and guests in reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness. It is an injustice that most persons in our society pay minimal attention to the disparities in the mental health system until there is a “real” threat. Students and Veterans Overcoming Depression and Suicide

Are suicide prevention programs working? How do you know if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts? These are the questions many adult students, including Student Veterans, are asking as they witness more reports of depression and suicide attempts on college campuses. In consideration, that over 70% of college students are categorized as adult or non-traditional students, there is concern that education and awareness is not very accessible to this group. Dr. Danita Applewhite and guests question whether the type of suicide prevention information available is addressing how stress, depression, disability can lead to suicide. In addition, many adult learners are completing online classes and degrees while managing the responsibility of a family, pressures at work, and physical and emotional challenges. Obviously, they need as much or even more support than the average student, especially Student Veterans adjusting to civilian life. Join our Special Guests Melinda Vail, Intuitive Therapist and Steve Schiro, Educator as they share information on the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention "Out of the Darkness Walks". To participate on the LIVE show call 1-646-727-3758, 10-11am (AZ-MTN). Veterans will share encouraging stories about overcoming PTSD and suicidal ideas to succeed in life. Students Discuss Healing From The Stress of Racism (RERUN)

The anxiety and stress from racism has affected people of all races and ethnicities, especially African-Americans! It is anticipated that our discussion will encourage teachers and counselors of adults to explore the psychological impact of racism in African-American students of all ages. The media continues to place great attention on George Zimmerman and the murder of Trayvon Martin and the many broken hearts over the verdict. Political and media hype continues shining light on the negative statistics associated with unemployment, education, and poverty of African-American males. Although the statistics are relevant, it is necessary that we shine light on the progress of African-Americans and how many people do "get along" regardless of race. Join Host, Dr. Applewhite, Dr. Beverly Johnson, and other teachers and Veterans in a positive discussion on ways to heal the scars of racism. Special Guest Dr. Beverly Johnson, is a retired professor from Arizona State University, and expert in Cultural Adaptive Therapy and Education.

Students Discuss the Reality of Discrimination

The term discrimination is too often associated with racism versus disability. In addition, racism and discrimination are frequently related in the U.S. media to the victimization of African-Americans and other Non-White groups by White Americans. As a result, African-American students with mental/learning or physical disabilities are often overlooked as they face the challenges of higher education and workforce success. Dr. Applewhite is joined by Special Guest Professor Kelmer Muhammad (Educator, Entrepreneur, Author) to discuss discrimination and realistic solutions. Veterans conclude our show with news updates for Student Veterans. Visit whiteappleinstitute.org and click on Radio for more information.

Students, Teachers, and Veterans Discuss Self-Esteem (LIVE)

It is common for Adult Learners, including Student Veterans, to experience periods of low self-esteem and related depression. This is reflected in their attitude and the way they perceive themselves before and after tests and job interviews. Many persons with disability (i.e., emotional challenges, invisible/learning/mental disabilities) are even more susceptible to negative images of themselves. Holding onto negative self-images will result in making excuses to justify dropping-out. Dr. Applewhite, Host, and special guests share techniques for raising self-esteem and changing our attitudes towards self and our world. How to Stop Being Afraid to Succeed! (ReRun)

The fear that random violence can erupt without notice is making a negative impact on many students and teachers. For some, this sense of being afraid is very REAL and is inhibiting our motivation to succeed at our educational and career goals. The worldview of violence has changed so dramatically that many are afraid to dream, set goals, or network with others. Random violence in the workplace, public places, churches and school campuses has increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. These are Mood Disorders that are causing many students, including adult students, to develop serious apprehensions about planning a successful future. There is an underlying mood of disillusionment and ambiguity in America. We must strive to believe that amidst the chaos LOVE still exist. Join Dr. Applewhite, students, teachers, and guests from all over the world in a discussion of how we can stop being afraid to succeed. Join us live at 10 am (AZ-GMT zone) on Saturdays by chat or calling 1-646-727-3758; or, just listen and share the archived show at http://blogtalkradio.com/student2teacher. Why Do Adult Students and Student Veterans Drop-Out-Live

According to research, nearly two-thirds of adult college students in the U.S. drop out prior to graduation! This is largely due to the lack of planning in all areas of life, sound advisement, and counseling intervention. Adult students with disabilities, who are parents, carry the additional responsibility of being a role model for their own children to finish school. There are many alarming reasons for Adult Students to drop-out from the idea of going to back to school or finishing the courses started. Awareness is the first step needed to motivate and encourage those struggling to meet the demands and stress of family, work, and school schedules. Hear a Special insight on mental illness and Miriam Carey. Join Dr. Applewhite and guests as they discuss how many overcome difficult experiences and transitions, especially Student Veterans with families..
