Seventeen of Maryland's 24 sheriffs are suing their own state in federal court over the Community Trust Act, the law that bars local police and county jails from questioning immigration status, holding anyone to check citizenship, or telling federal immigration authorities about people in their custody without a court order. An ICE detainer is not enough. The suit was filed in May in Greenbelt with the Federation for American Immigration Reform as counsel. This week the sheriff leading it, Jeffrey Gahler of Harford County, took it to Capitol Hill one week before the 25th anniversary of 9/11: "When you pass legislation in a world post-9/11, in 9/11 we learned that we need to communicate with all federal partners."
