Gabbie Hanna's Pattern of Anti-Blackness | Your Mental Health Doesn't Excuse Your Racism
Esplicito
Gabbie Hanna has a long track record of creating anti-Black content for engagement. Recently during a public manic state, she had several racist outbursts on TikTok. Her fans are defending her right to not apologize, due to her mental state, and that excuse is not going to fly. Gabbie herself has returned to the platform and hasn't properly addressed these comments. In fact, since returning, she has stated that racism is an issue she's *very* passionate about. If that's truly the case, she can start at home by addressing her own anti-Black behavior. Destigmatize Abortion On & Off Screen | Pt. 1: The History
TW: r*pe, s*xual & reproductive ab*se, m*tilation, sl*very, g*nocide, r*cism, anti-Blackness, ableism, classism In this 2 part series, I'll be exploring the evolution of anti-abortion stigma. In part 1, I share my experience with abortion and explore the roots of anti-abortion rhetoric and policy in America. In part 2, I'll examine how the media has both reaffirmed and subverted the negative connotations associated with the procedure over time. Every source I mentioned/referenced today: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13Vo09ly3aLvmHB3u3P_EvAagEQgGO0qSz6VK2VqkOm8/edit?usp=sharing Feel free to add to this discussion! I'd love to chat more with y'all on this topic. But please do not be rude or shame anyone in the comments. If there have ever been any abortion portrayals in media that have stood out to you, let me know why in the comments! Billie Eilish & Performative Allyship | Dissecting White Guilt
Billie Eillish is a young 20 year-old pop artist who has risen to superstardom over the last seven years with songs like “Ocean Eyes”, “Bad Guy” and “Everything I Ever Wanted”. As her popularity has grown, her name is often brought up in conversations surrounding the appropriation of Black culture. While I am frequently annoyed by Billie’s *maybe* passive appropriation, I am more frustrated by her performative gestures. So today, we’ll be discussing what performative allyship looks like through the lens of Billie Eillish’s actions. This is 'With Nuance', an audio and visual essay experience where we dissect all things media from a socio-political lens. Stereotypes & Nonsense | Why Euphoria Needs A Writers Room
Esplicito
The wildly popular Euphoria of 2022 is actually an adaptation, based on an original Israeli series of the same name. In 2017, HBO announced they were developing an adaptation with original creator Ron Leshem and director Dafna Levin on board as executive producers, alongside Sam Levinson. This adaptation is currently one of the most talked about series on television. It’s officially HBO’s second most watched show behind Game of Thrones. The series sure does know how to spark a conversation, but is it good though? Let’s talk about why Euphoria needs to get a REAL writing room together or they need to cancel season 3. 00:00 Intro 02:50 Behind The Scenes Drama 08:41 Colorblind or Colorism? 20:01 Maddy & The Spicy Latina Trope 28:33 Gratuitous Teen Nudity 36:27 Plot Holes & Nonsense Twitter & Instagram https://twitter.com/itsJODONNA https://www.instagram.com/itsjodonna/ My Favorite Euphoria Analyses: Euphoria's Colorism Problem: How The Show Harms Dark Skin Girls and Women (Ms. Vixen) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8V4gGOZKV4&t=664s Euphoria & All The Black Pop Cultural References (Black Femininity TV) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7rNSRTfv40 analyzing the outfits in euphoria (ModernGurlz) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YmSUF3Lyyg Sources: Inside ‘Euphoria's’ Grueling Days and Cast Unrest - https://nofilmschool.com/euphorias-grueling-days-and-cast-discontent Why Euphoria Star Algee Smith Is Missing This Season - https://www.thedailybeast.com/why-euphoria-star-algee-smith-is-missing-this-season We Need To Talk About What's Going On With Kat In This Season Of 'Euphoria' - https://www.elle.com.au/culture/kat-euphoria-storyline-controversy-26641 “Euphoria” Utilizes Black Trauma for Character Development - https://www.bitchmedia.org/article/euphoria-christopher-mckay-treatment-of-black-characters TV Tropes 'The Spicy Latina' - https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpicyLatina Esparanza United 'Latinas and Intimate Partner Violence Evidence Based Facts' - https://esperanzaunited.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/3.11.73-Factsheet_GeneralIPV2021-1.pdf Sydney Sweeney Pushed Back Against Some of Her Euphoria Nude Scenes - https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/01/sydney-sweeney-pushed-back-against-some-of-her-euphoria-nude-scenes

Retire The Role Of First Lady | Misogynoir & Gatekeeping In Hip-Hop
Esplicito
Lil Kim, Salt-n-Peppa, Nicki Minaj and countless other women in Hip-Hop have often been referred to as First Ladies. Even today, when women are mentioned as a demographic within the genre, they’re most frequently called the First Ladies of Hip-Hop. On the surface, the title seems like a high honor to hold. But time and time again, the industry has proven this to be a hollow term, used by labels to prop up their only female artist. It's shifted in it's original use, and it's main purpose today is to reinforce the gender binary in Hip-Hop.
