Selling a Dream, Living a Nightmare: Nature Boy & Carbon Nation (Part 1)
In 2015, amid a backdrop of intense societal fear, racial injustice, and trauma in America, a charismatic voice emerged online promising a radical escape. Eligio Bishop—a former barber, army veteran, and dancer—rebranded himself as “Nature Boy” (and later, “3God”). He used social media to recruit young, vulnerable Black creatives, selling them a dream of a “Black utopia.” He urged them to leave the United States, drop out of "grind culture," and return to a pure, communal life in nature. But the dream quickly soured. Moving his followers across remote pockets of Central and South America, Bishop transitioned from a fatherly spiritual guide into a textbook cult leader.
