Through the Church Fathers: Introduction to the Martyrdom of Polycarp, Perpetua, and Felicity
Through the Church Fathers di C. Michael Patton
Note sull'episodio
Faithfulness rarely announces itself with drama, but when it is finally tested, it reveals everything. In today’s reading, we move from Polycarp the pastor to Polycarp the martyr, watching the steady faith we already encountered in his letter to the Philippians reach its final moment of public confession. Alongside him stand two figures many Christians have never heard of—Perpetua and Felicity—two women without titles, power, or protection, whose obedience to Christ proved stronger than family pressure, social status, and even death itself. Together, these martyrdom accounts show that early Christian faith was not sustained by ideas alone, but by allegiance lived out across a lifetime, whether in the long obedience of an elderly bishop or the quiet resolve of two obscure women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of our shared faith.
